shamanicshaymin: A teddy bear flops on its belly from its pillow. (Rilakkuma :: Too Tired For This)
My mind is clearly not wired for binge-watching; I've caught up rewatching five episodes of Evangelion before I started getting a headache. It's the same with books, I get reader headaches if I read a whole bunch of pages in one sitting. No wonder I struggled catching up with studying in university.

While I feel like I'm hitting a mid-life crisis yet again in my mid-30s, here's my current Blue Kaizo progress.

New Recruits

Dinner the Farfetch'd (Who we likely won't use)
Beak Squad the Dodrio
Jevil the Mr. Mime (Which I was NOT expecting. We have a Psychic now! :D)

Evolutions

Falco to Fearow (Another first! I was always more a Spearow fan than Pidgey, but I never made it to Fearow until Kaizo. His Drill Peck is amazing)
Glenn to Poliwrath
Alan to Arcanine (it was a hard choice between him and Shiori the Vulpix, but the latter had such a dismal defense stat and I already had a fast Fire type in Lorenzo)
Rumika to Vileplume
Poggers to Sandslash
Aelita to Clefable
Lorenzo to Rapidash
Remy to Raichu

Lorenzo is incredible and knocked out all the trainers in Nugget Bridge and after, I love him so much. It always baffled me how Ponyta never learns Flamethrower by level up, and even in the D/P/Pt days, it didn't take long for me to box Ponyta in favor of the Chimchar line (or some other fire Pokemon through trade, because Sinnoh is allergic to fire types for some reason) because Ponyta took forever to evolve. But in Blue Kaizo, Ponyta and Rapidash finally get to live up to their potential by not only being an early-game mon, but actually learning Flamethrower. I hope I'll be able to use Lorenzo throughout the game and maybe even the Elite 4, though I'm not getting my hopes up knowing how brutal late-game will be. ;;

Sahaquiel and Rumika were the MVPs during the grind, and the latter took out a good half of Misty's Pokemon before falling to Ice Beam. Remy cleaned up after, and he didn't need Sahaquiel's help either~ So that's the Cascade Badge on the first try!
shamanicshaymin: Glorious beautiful Shaymin against a flowery backdrop. (Pusheen :: Pikachu)
Me: Finally, I made it to Cerulean City! ...I have to train for Misty, don't I?

Repels made all the difference for Mt. Moon. I used a video to pick up a secret Moon Stone too! :D Seel's backsprite is a smiling blob with a tongue sticking out and it's the cutest thing ever.

Had my first instance of a humiliating defeat in a goddamn cheating AI. A Rocket member had a Gastly and a Kadabra (guess which Pokemon I don't get until near the end of the game! :D), which Luisa the Machop was not equipped for and I had to switch around my team yet again. Sahaquiel the Magneton was our hero for Mt. Moon. ;; I've been training Tiptoe the Ivysaur too, but I'm concerned about Misty since she'll have psychic and ice moves for any grass-types she's up against, and Thunderbolt from Starmie is gonna hurt. D:

Aside from that burst of activity, I've been absolutely bored, yet too unmotivated to do anything. It's the worst mood, I swear.
shamanicshaymin: Glorious beautiful Shaymin against a flowery backdrop. (Heather :: Contemplative)
Catching up on Evangelion while playing Blue Kaizo is giving me weird dreams, and I'm not even at the darker episodes of Eva yet.

I had a dream AVGN was reviewing The Rescuers for the NES, except it doesn't really act like an NES game at all, let alone have much to do with The Rescuers. Basically, you play as Penny and run away aboard a ship. Each level you're in a storm and facing off against the sky, where the clouds form a variety of nightmare fuel monsters (which get creepier and stronger with each level) that threaten to drown you or throw you overboard. The entire soundtrack is Tori Amos music, with one song for each level. In fact, most of the review is gushing about how hardcore Tori is rather than the game itself. :P

I want a psychological horror game like that now. Where you're a runaway kid facing your demons at sea, I mean.

I miss The Rescuers. Particularly because I watched a video about how underrated Down Under is and I wholeheartedly agree. I'm sad we'll never have a third Rescuers movie... but at the same time, I'm glad both movies are relatively ignored by Disney and not subject to ~ * ~ The Disney Brand ~ * ~ and their other current garbage that sucks the soul and passion out of their movies. Heaven forbid they ever try to do a live-action remake (shudder). There's a reason animation exists as a medium; I never watched the Stuart Little movies because the live-action setting with a talking CGI mouse was too fucking weird for me. Modern Disney dunking on traditional animation aside, you just know they'd butcher Miss Bianca and Bernard's characters and turn the former into a Catty Girlboss TM. D: She's already feminist, leave her alone! (Oh wait, they are leaving her alone. Good. Let it stay that way)

Funny how dreams make me nostalgic for weird things. Hmm.

I've been digging around old DW and LJ comms looking for Heather Mason icons, but it's much harder than I thought. D: Icons are either broken or smeared with that ugly Photobucket watermark I hate so much. Anyone know where I can find some?

Sara Jaye has finally gotten into Undertale and Earthbound and I am so happy, omg omg omg (and she's a Friskriel convert, so even better!)

...Hi. I've been terrible about using Dreamwidth, but I assure you I've been doing better than last time. I'm currently playing tons of Minecraft and my boyfriend helped me out by using an old secondary account of his so I can play on the PC for free when he's not around with his PS4. Here are my worlds thus far!

- Gethen (PS4 Bedrock)

Named after the ice planet and main setting of Ursula K. Le Guin's Left Hand of Darkness, this world takes place in a snowy taiga/tundra/glacier ocean. I have an endless supply of snow so I've been making igloos all over the place so I don't get lost and have places to rest so I'm not constantly murdered by monsters. I've been watching building tutorials on Youtube so I can make better houses, and the roofs are all color-coordinated so I can keep track of which part of the map I'm at! Turning coordinates on is a life-saver, dear god. I've discovered two abandoned ships which I've named after the HMS Terror and Erebus, and am in the process of covering the beach where the former is at in gravel so I can recreate the stone cairn and four graves of Beechey Island. While looking for the treasure chest near the Terror, I found an underground mineshaft which I still have to properly explore. I also found a small series of islands where it's warm enough to farm better and tame wild horses!

I love taming wolves so much. <3 Usually I keep a pack of up to six/seven to properly defend myself from vicious mobs and keep tons of food at hand to heal them. You gotta be responsible so you can avoid as much heartbreak as possible. ;; I fucking hate Creepers, ugggggggh. Though thankfully now they have a better use for me because I figured out how to craft dynamite. 8) I generally treat all the livestock as friends and give them as much space as possible for their pens. I've slowly been building my herd of rainbow sheep! If I do kill them for food (usually for the wolves if I don't have enough rotten flesh)/leather, I make sure none of it goes to waste. >( I have to build a higher fence for my chicken coop since snow foxes keep pouncing in and eating all my chickens, auuuuuugh. D: I still gotta breed foxes so I can have a tame one of my own...

- M1A1 (PS4 Bedrock)

Actually Jax's file, haha. But I loooooooove playing multiplayer with my boyfriend and helping him develop his world~ It's more or less a series of foresty/grassy islands with steep mountains and cave systems everywhere. I not only found a gigantic underground base (of which I died a jillion times before I finally placed enough torches and campfires to get the mobs to fuck off), I found my first geode! It's amethyst and omg it's so gorgeous! ;; I also got a ton of livestock and built ranches for Jax, including taming a donkey and a horse for the future mule achievement. Jax is slowly flexing his creative muscles and managed to build a stable and tame another horse on his own~ <3

- The World (PC Java)

lol using a placeholder name from .hack 'cause I'm so original. I ended up getting a really good seed on the first try! I'm on a series of islands where I got both light and dark oak trees along with birch in my arsenal, a mushroom island, and I've already found the ruins of a Nether portal! I'm currently following a tutorial to building a small witchy hut before I turn enemies on, and there's dolphins swimming around! I gotta feed them so they can show me buried treasure and undersea temples later...

Edit: Did more exploring and it's mostly an ocean biome! I'm naming it Koholint. :D

I'm looking forward to watching an LP of Silent Hill 3! :D

2021 sure went by fast, huh?

- My strategy for surviving life (or rather, Survival Strategy, since it was the year I finally watched Mawaru Penguindrum) was me trying not to panic too much about the future and things I haven't done yet and focus squarely on the present. Practice self-care, stop beating yourself up for not making a ton of major life accomplishments in your early 30s (and now that I type that, I wonder if this is all an act? Ah ha ha ha ha...) and remind yourself that being healthy and not dead is the best thing you can do right now. Take care of my dogs and chinchillas and make sure they're living their best life.

- SPEAKING OF WHICH. Mom's allergies for dogs who aren't Bichon Frises somehow went away, so we went to animal control and rescued a year-and-a-half old lab mix. We renamed her from Gracie Mae to Daisy Mae and she's the biggest sweetheart. She never barks or jumps and is very well-behaved, and she was afraid to come inside the house at first, believing she had to stay in the backyard. ;; But slowly she's been overcoming her shyness, and Neville and Lulubelle love to play with her~ ♥ She's been smiling more and more as she realizes she has a forever home with us, and it makes me so happy. ;;

- As a result of me and the family looking after Daisy Mae, this and a lack of inspiration forced me to drop out of Yuletide, unfortunately. :( I still got two wonderful gifts though! I got Himari/Ringo fic where they discover the Desire Camera from SCP Foundation (rated M for sexual content, nothing too graphic) and a gloriously creepy story about the Cannibal Ants from a Polish Bunker. Hopefully I can write something good next year!

- My bf Jax has been helping me catch up on some really good movies, like Natural Born Killers, Reservoir Dogs, Minority Report, and The Matrix. Yes, the original Matrix. I love it so much I have no desire to watch any of the sequels or the new movie, though I'm still interested in The Animatrix. In return, I finally got Jax into Undertale! He didn't even want to do Genocide run after I played through True Pacifist route, so he watched a Youtube video instead. Sans is his favorite character (he also likes Mettaton and Burgerpants) and he loves borrowing my Sans figurine to sit on his lap as he plays video games at my house~ It's so cute!

- Animal Crossing: New Horizons is the first time I have ever finished decorating my island, and I'm still blown away by all 1,845 hours I devoted to Magicant. I've been working on my second island, a kidcore paradise named Echolalia, but auuuuugh, it's taking forever and I'm getting too burnt out for future islands I want to do in the future (a farmcore island inspired by farming sim games named Stardew, and a Rubyquest & Nanquest based horror island) and it makes me sad. D: Happy Home Paradise and the 2.0 Update helps a lot, but oof, I think I still need a break. Right when one of my friends reset their island to get into AC again too! D: Maybe playing Pokemon Brilliant Diamond will help with my block?

- Other stuff happened, I guess? I have insomnia and cramps, it's kind of hard to think now. Owwie.

I've been on Discord 24/7, and the Empty Movement server has become a second home to me. There's so many wonderful people there, and dear gods, we need each other in these trying times. Especially with Georgia and Alabama passing the most misogynistic bills alive, and it's only a matter of time before Texas follows and it affects me too. Uggggh.

I've been posting a lot of my ramblings on life and fandom and video games on Discord... which I ought to be crossposting on DW, huh? I'm wondering about getting a Pillowfort, but I don't know how active that place actually is and I'm not forking over cash that could better be used for saving up to move to Canada. I really need to be more active about planning for my future (I'm fucking 30), especially if I don't want to be completely sucked into the downward spiral that are my parents' lives.

I have an Instagram now! I share all the photos and videos I take of my puppies and chinchillas there. :3

I've currently been watching Saranzanmai, and god, I love how fucking batshit insane that show is. It makes me want to watch Ikuhara's other shows. I've been meaning to watch Yuri Kuma Arashi for a while (mixed opinions everywhere and the beginning is supposed to suck before it gets good) and I'm finally giving Mawaru Penguindrum a chance despite my misgivings on it (there's a certain scene that makes me go YUCK but the other parts may be worth watching). Kunihiko Ikuhara is basically the Hideo Kojima of anime. XDDD Hopefully it won't be like my experience with the Pokemon movies where I absolutely adored the Lucario movie, and then I was constantly disappointed by the other films. At least I got the Lati@s, Jirachi, Mewtwo Returns, and Shaymin (despite its flaws) movies and Darkrai manga (which I genuinely like compared to my love/hate relationship with the movie) out of it? And I liked the Zoroark movie (let's face it, Zorua stole the show. ;D ) so that was a good place to quit the PokeMovies, haha.

Speaking of PokeMovies, I don't trust the upcoming remake of the Mewtwo movie at all. By all means, I would love a remake, since it benefits from one where it addresses its flaws and fixes its plot holes (LIKE WHY THE FUCK TOGEPI WASN'T CLONED) But it looks like it's going the Live-Action Disney Remake path and basically be exactly the same movie but CGI. Uggggggh. If they cut the Mewtwo's Origin prologue, I'm going to be so pissed off. Yes, you can technically have the movie without it, but you're cutting the heart and soul out of it if you do. Blegh, there's a reason I don't bother with main Pokemon anime anymore.

My best friend and I have been working hard on our Charasriel (eventually Chariskriel) masterpiece! I'm actually supposed to be editing the third chapter right now, so I'll do that after I finish this DW entry. I've also been heavily into Cuphead and there's a million shippy fanfics for a million ships (most of them involving Cagney Carnation. *cough*) I want to write. I also fell in love with Haunting Ground and I'm really getting into Rule of Rose despite my initial mixed reactions to it. More "Girl and Her Dog" horror games plz.

I'm not going to miss this year. At all. Thanks to politics, it's pretty much been one long endurance run where the extinction of important species and even the apocalypse feels like one executive order away. Two states (including mine) got flooded, and Puerto Rico is without power while our fucking government sits on their asses with their ears plugged in the hopes everyone on the island will die off soon. Don't get me started what's happening to Net Neutrality, and I pray to god Ajit Pai and the FCC are successfully sued.

That said, I'm knocking wood due to events that happened which makes me cling to hope a little. Like...

- Exposing Harvey Weinstein and the following arrests of predators who have gotten away with their shit for WAY too long. I'm crossing my fingers that the #MeToo movement is more than just a trend, and we can FINALLY get overdue laws into place once we kick out the 45 Administration. The toxic systems in Hollywood and workplaces in general need to be overthrown, not called out for several months before things return to the status quo. They must be gone for good.
- Doug Jones' victory over a homophobic racist pedophile. I know we can't rely on black voters to always get white people out of our messes and we can truly thank them by electing more black people (especially black women) into powerful government positions, but I'm grateful all the same. I'm glad "keep fighting" isn't just an empty mantra under Unholy Orange Hell.

It's been pretty big fandom-wise.

- My best friend and I have been RPing a big Charasriel (which later became Chariskriel) AU we call The Scars We Choose. This AU has kept us sane throughout the whole year, and it's what kept me active in writing. Even if I barely got much done in fic this year, I've been VERY productive regarding TSWC. We have fanmixes, art, and everything. TSWC has just been so cathartic for us, it's incredible. I'm proud of the work we're doing for it. ;;
- After suffering and dealing with the worst of Undertale fandom for so long, I finally got invited to a few Discord groups where I felt welcome and safe. I missed the warmth, love, and creativity of that side of UT fandom so much, and I'm glad I got those spaces whenever I'm down.
- This is the year I also went to PAX San Antonio! I got to see my TSWC partner there and it was the first time I got to meet an online friend IRL. ;; Realmscon was also magical because I GOT TO SEE FUCKING VOLTAIRE. Hands down the best concert I've been to. It's like hanging out at a campfire with an old friend who happens to be a gothic rum-loving skeleton raised by bats.
- Much to my surprise, TCM did a showing of rare cult classic Belladonna of Sadness (NSFW) (the movie that inspired Kunihiko Ikuhara into becoming an anime director) and my parents recorded it for me! I didn't know what I was going to think about it coming in. But holy fuck. I loved it. Considering I watched it right on the heels of the election of the Orange Führer, a movie where a wronged and traumatized woman makes a deal with the devil and gains power, and whole village respects her and they give a giant Fuck You to the so-called "righteous" church monarchy terrorizing them, it is SO satisfying. Even with the ending, it clearly shows that the revolution is Not Over. Needless to say, you can see why Ikuhara likes this movie. :P The movie is definitely Not For Everyone (rape, explicit sex, violence, exploration of witchcraft and witch hunts, Nightmare Fuel up the wazoo, TRIPPY AS BALLS ANIMATION) but goddamn, did it hit all the right notes for me. Not to mention there's the gorgeous watercolor art and TRIPPY AS BALLS ANIMATION and an awesome 70s soundtrack. 8)
- I finally got around to playing OneShot. Perfect timing too, because the Solstice update came out this year. omg omg omg it's so good. ;; It's interesting to compare with OFF and Undertale (though one of its primary inspirations is Hyper Light Drifter, which I still have to play. ;;), but it's very much its own thing and does crazy shit with your computer that serves a purpose WAY beyond gimmicks. The game is smart without being smug, and it has a warm heart at the center of it all. ;; Niko is the biggest cinnamon roll in the world and I love them so much, aaaaaaaa. I won't spoil anything at all, let's just say a certain scene between Niko and the Entity legitimately made me cry. Solstice spoiler snippet for one line of dialogue. ) Also, I recommend after you get one of the two original endings of the game that you listen to Yin / Yang: A OneShot Concept Album. Hell, my current icon even comes from the cover. :o My favorite track would definitely be the first one, "A Distant Prayer (Ending)." The vocalist even reminds me of Sharon den Adel from Within Temptation. ;;
- My family and I got to see Coco for Christmas (and we mercifully were spared of the 22-minute Olaf special). Congratulations Pixar: you made the second movie to reduce me to tears (the first was Inside Out). Like, my relationship with Pixar films has been like this:

UP: teary-eyed near the end, but didn't cry.
Toy Story 3: Touched, but didn't get teary-eyed.
Inside Out: Cried near the end.
Coco: Cried twice in two different scenes near the end.

So... Coco. A++

Hurricane Fanmix Progress: I haven't forgotten any of you at all! Progress is just really slow, aaaaaa. [personal profile] calliatra, your smut inspiration mix is almost ready! I got all the songs I need, I just need to make the cover and the write-up post. I hope this'll be worth the wait. ;;

Happy New Year, everyone. Let's not blow it on 2018.

'Neopets': Inside Look at Early 2000s Internet Girl Culture

Basically it's about how Neopets fostered an environment that enabled girls to do cool things like learn coding, be graphic designers, build websites and create tutorials for others on how to make them, etc. Many of them are self-taught. Hell, everything I learned about coding and graphic design came from wanting to make my LJ and icons look respectable. :o
shamanicshaymin: Glorious beautiful Shaymin against a flowery backdrop. (Wadanohara :: Yay!)
A decent and honest review of Wadanohara and the Deep Blue Sea.

I want to print what this guy says about Mogeko's writing and characterization and paste it on my door. THANK GOD ME AND ZAR AREN'T THE ONLY ONES WHO FOUND IT MEDIOCRE. Every other review I read (aside from one bitchy one that screeches how everyone who plays the game are problematic monsters who should burn in hell) gushes over its OMG AMAZING STORY/CHARACTERS/ETC. and I'm sitting here thinking, "Uh... no?" Plus this guy brings up some good points that I hadn't mentioned in my own review, like Wadanohara's passiveness (and how it makes her boring as the main protagonist, despite her cute design) or how the main villain just didn't work for me as a villain.

Frankly, I’m also amazed at how many people either adore [Wadanohara] or want to bang her. Anyone who doesn’t find her lovable or at least cute is most definitely a villain, and I don’t think her familiars have any life goals outside of her at all. Is that what being a familiar is about? I mean, Chlomaki’s lobster familiar is more developed than them by virtue of wanting her father to be safe and having a life outside of her master. Considering they’re there for almost all of the story, that’s… kinda sad.

I knew there was a reason I liked Lobco and not just her design; she's got more personality than Wadda's three familiars combined. Three whole characters who are supposed to be important side characters.

OH OH AND THIS:

Quick spoilers for the big twist! tw: rape & sexual assault )

It’s a cut above average RPG Maker games, but that’s not saying much. To me, it’s the equivalent of bad (as in mediocrely bad, not bad bad or hilariously bad) fanfiction in RPG Maker form. It’s junk food for people who like cute romances, cute characters, good graphics, & surprise creepiness. That’s not a bad thing to like though - sometimes, you just need something cute. And, you know, there’s nothing wrong with that either.

Which is the best way to describe the game, imo. WHY MUST THE ART BE SO GOOD *sob* Also, this guy recs Dreaming Mary in place of Wadda, just like I did! I wonder if we're secretly cousins.

I don't know when I'm loading the Realmscon photos, since I don't have a cable for my phone yet. So instead, let's talk about Undertale.

I did both peace and genocide runs. I'm going to go indeph in spoilers into this, and Undertale is the kind of game you should NOT be spoiled for. So... play it first, okay? Then come back and hear me cry.

Inside the labyrinth walls, there lies a tiny child who sleeps alone )

And this child I will destroy if you try to set her free )

I recommend playing the peace run, then if you're wondering THAT much about the genocide route, you can play it up to a point... THEN FOR THE LOVE OF GOD STOP AND RESET BEFORE YOU FACE ASGORE. That way, you'll get all the extra dialogue about what you've done that round for the next playthrough, but still have a chance to redeem yourself. You can always watch the genocide ending on Youtube. Listen to people when they say personally beating the genocide run will ruin the best ending forever. Not just in a metaphorical/psychological sense. It literally WILL.

Well, That Escalated Quickly

Someone at the Mary-Sue posted an article about the idea that Samus might be trans. It went just about as well as expected.

Something that's been bothering me regarding transphobia. ALL CAPS at the end, with a mini-rant about biphobia. )

*panting* I think I need to look at a pile of potatoes.

One of my favorite things about good writing is that no matter how much you read, there's still an awesome twist out there that'll totally rock your world. I love being wrong in my predictions and being totally surprised. :D

Mermaid Swamp was like that. Goddamn. I won't look at "mermaids" the same way again. Fun Fact: I got the absolute worst endings first, and that was me playing normally. Whoops. But looking back, getting the bad endings first is how I recommend playing this game. It gives you much more food for thought by the time you get the True Ending. Quick spoiler for the 'Secrets' Ending )

I've forgotten how unnerved I get by bloated things floating in the water. Probably due to my family looking after sick goldfish in my childhood. The nasty gurgling sounds you hear when you enter Yuka's room... ugh.

I like that Rin is a loud-mouth, haha. XD I'm used to having a silent protagonist or someone like Yuka as the main character in RPG Horror games, so Rin's a nice change of pace. While I've seen shippy art of her and Seitaro together, I prefer them as Vitriolic Best Buds. Seems more fun that way.

I've been so pleased with Uri's games! I liked Paranoic, and I liked The Crooked Man even more. Dat storytelling, man. All I've got left to play is The Sandman, which I'll check out next time I'm disappointed with a game. :D

Had I the heavens' embroidered cloths,
Enwrought with golden and silver light,
The blue and the dim and the dark cloths
Of night and light and the half-light,
I would spread the cloths under your feet:
But I, being poor, have only my dreams;
I have spread my dreams under your feet;
Tread softly because you tread on my dreams.

Happy 10th Anniversary, Yume Nikki. You've changed my life forever and made me the Indie Horror nerd I am today. You've changed the gaming world forever and influenced new masterpieces such as Ib and Dreaming Mary. I will always and forever be in your debt.

You ever get that show/game/etc. you think you don't care about that much, but a certain character and/or ship latches onto you in spite of yourself?

It's happening with Samekichi and SameWada from Wadanohara and the Great Blue Sea. HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEELP
