All art is at once surface and symbol

Remember when I said I was trying to look for the Broadway soundtrack of the flopped Raggedy Ann musical? I got some good (bad?) news! The guy who played some songs for me on Livestream uploaded them all for download!

The zip includes the demo and "official" versions. I haven't listened to the entire thing yet (I'll traumatize myself another day), but I jumped to "Rag Dolly" 'cause that was the one I was most curious about. The musical only shares two songs from the movie, "Blue" and "Rag Dolly." The latter has different lyrics, so you end up having three (four if you count the awful "Disco Dolly") versions of the same song.

"Rag Dolly" in the movie is cute, but it worked better as an instrumental. It doesn't tell us anything new about Raggedy Ann (whose character was already established through "I Look (And What Do I See?")) and it didn't do anything to advance the plot except for the Captain trying to fix his spyglass, and his sneeze fit interruptions were annoying. Broadway!"Rag Dolly" on the other hand? It's about a sad and lonely Raggedy Ann questioning her worth as a toy. No kidding.

The version I'm sharing the lyrics for is the demo, which had an intro that got snipped from the final version. I uploaded the song as a single Mp3 so you don't have to wait forever on the zip. Talking to Nam about Raggedy Ann & Andy is so much fun. ;; I'm tempted to draw stuff or something, but mwaaa, my art is so ugly. XD I'm trying to avoid thinking about my Writer's Test for a while 'cause I'm at this stage where I hate everything I write again and it doesn't help I'm still stuffy and have a slight cough. I have a library book due, but I'll have to ask Mom or Dad to drive me 'cause I'm scared of going out in the heat. It's kind of a long walk to the library and back, and last time I came home, I felt kinda sick and feverish. I was worried I'd pass out from overheat or something, even though I wore a hat and sunglasses. D:

I haven't been to VDex in AGES. I'm going around catching chocolate Mareeps for the heck of it, haha. XD

Day 9. A song/artist you wish more people knew about

Iris is probably the most obscure artist on my flist, and I wouldn't have heard about them if it wasn't for Zar. I know at least one other listener on my flist as well, so I'm gonna spend this post talking about Suzanne Vega. It's all live on YouTube, so instead of links, have an Mp3 post. Yay! :D

I came across her work on a Pokemon Sapphire FST, and a song for the Magma/Aqua orb was an interesting little tune called Small Blue Thing. It was pretty and atmospheric, and its subject not quite like anything I've heard before:

I ran into Suzanne Vega several more times on fst after that, with range going from a similar premise to Small Blue Thing (If I Were a Weapon, Machine Ballerina) songs of quiet-but-strong-resolve (Solitude Standing, Marlene on the Wall, Rock in This Pocket (Song of David)), some that were sad (The Queen and the Solider, Night Vision) and others that were strange, interesting and/or fun (Blood Makes Noise, Stockings) Then I froze at the name of a particular song: Institution Green. Long ago, I read a disturbing fic by Sad Mudokon about Shy Guys that was titled, Golden Saffron or Institution Green?, whose ending was left for interpretation whether the protagonist found salvation in his brutal death or had gone mad from the trauma. The second I saw the title, I thought, "Holy shit, it's that fic." and wondered if Sad Mudokon had this song in mind while she was writing. :o And I, urm, was playing this song after a super rough emotional period of my life, so it was a surreal experience. <.<;;;

I'm hesitant to really talk about my NaNoNovel '10 much except with close friends, mainly because I don't want to snuff my creativity and/or enthusiasm for a pivotal scene between two characters in the middle of the book. The song is erm, like a triple entrende.



In other news... my mind is blown. I didn't pay much attention to the Inception theme before, but shit. Oh shit oh shit oh shit.

Also, Piers Anthony is a sexist creep and I'm glad I never read any of his books. Including this one, where a five-year-old voluntarily has sex with a grown man and it's treated as a GOOD thing.

Making money in VDex is haaaard. D: Dungeons are such a pain and take forever to go through. The enemies stop giving you stat raises, you get billions of spells while healing/keys/good equipment allude you (either you break the chest or there's crap inside. @.@;;;) and the boss is eons more powerful than you, which often results in a hit-and-run strategy. Auuuuuuugh. If any of you have VDex, let me know and I'll add you back! It looks like a few (including Blu) found me first. :)

Sorry for the lack of activity lately, I've been depressed. Still am, actually. Finished watching a Let's Play of Silent Hill 1 if that tells you anything. My Giegue/Maria/George song. Maybe I'll make an FST dedicated to their tragic end this December. Who knows. Other than that, lol, bad memories of ex-friend haunting me. Tried reading Little Nemo comics to feel better, but I have no patience for repetitive formulas now.

I think the Lucario movie is my 2nd favorite after Mewtwo Strikes Back. ;__________; (Hell, we got some competition here!) It's got about everything I love: lavish costumes, giant poofy dresses, cloaks and hats, ballroom dancing, chandeliers (WE'RE GONNA DROP THE CHANDELIER PHANTOM OF THE OPERA STYLE--oh crap, that never happened) Krazyshipping (at the beginning when he catches Pika on the roof and later when Meowth said, "And I made sure Pikachu was safe." I was all "Awwww! ;____;"), tons of subtext (BOY-ON-POKEMON-TACKLE-TIME-IN-THE-WATER), poor Brock having a girl like him while still having a chance for once, gorgeous fantastic visuals (the time flowers, the entirety of the Tree of Beginning) mild Pikachu angst, scariness and waaaaaaaaaaaah! moments, creepy white blood cells that appeal to my twisted-freak side, understandable angst that doesn't make me want to punch someone in the face, empathy (when I wanted to punch Lucario in the face for being a prick, Ash did. XD), tie-in relations with the Mother series (Notice how the Queen looks like a Pokemon-styled version of Queen Mary?), HOT SPRINGS, Team Rocket's hysterical lines and their "AWWWWWWWW!" inducing reunion with Meowth in the end (because you know he's worried! ;;) real peril, fantasy and castles and knights, robot-sounding Regis which-made-them-cooler-than-they-really-were, NAKED SIR AARON WITH HIS CLOTHES HANGING ON THE BRANCHES--ohwaithe'sinhisregulartunicinvitingLucariotodiphisfeetinthewaterGODDAMMIT, lonely child-like characters even though I'm tempted to call Mew a selfish prick that did damage to herself and the tree just to keep Pikachu--ooh wait. Fic bunny! But yeah, Puri thinks Movie1!Mew is cuter. Sounds better too, like a bell instead of Amy Rose trying to voice Pikachu or something. XDDDD, finally the beautiful romance relationship between Lucario and Sir Aaron. Just... waaaaaaaaaaaaaaah! ;_____________________; They'resosweetomgIlovethemOTPOTP
