omg guys guys. You know how Don Bluth talked about making a Dragon's Lair movie, but it got stuck in Development Hell?

This is your chance to make it happen.

Not only will this bring him back to the big screen, it'll give 2D animation another chance to shine. FUCK YEAH.

The Neverending Story is officially one of my new favorite movies, and I regret not seeing it as a child. I want a nice fuzzy Falcor of my own. I almost never have crushes, so it's notable I fell insta-love with Atreyu. Atreyu is so pretty. ;;

Me: 50 Shades slut-shames women who dare to be kinkier than the heroine and treats BDSM as something resulting from mental illness.
Me: But I never said anything about the audience--
Public: DUNT B A PRUDE!!11

Nice to know that pointing out a book romanticizes abuse means I'm kink-shaming someone for their fantasies, even though the series makes it explicitly clear a sexually-confident woman is to be regarded as complete scum of the universe under Ana's feet.

It won't matter if I explain and defend myself until I'm blue in the face. No one will listen.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised the movie's making money, no matter how much I cross my fingers and pray that it'll bomb. But now it means the next two movies (or THREE, if they decide to go with the "split-the-last-book-into-two-movies" fad) are going to follow me for the next few years like a parasite that won't fucking detach.

I don't care if I'm overreacting. I don't care if it's "just a book/movie." I don't care if there are worse things out there, like The Turner Diaries or whatever the hell people are saying about American Sniper. I'm allowed to be upset about more than one thing, even if it isn't as "lethal." I'm just sick and tired of people writing off kink such as BDSM as something only "damaged monsters" are into while abusive-but-rich-and-hot-and-heteronormative and double standards are glorified. I'm tired of E.L. James' smug grin as she rolls in the pile of money she doesn't deserve. I'm tired of being shut down just because I'm a "kink-shaming prude feminist who doesn't like fun."

This miserable series just won't go away.

Jesus tumblr, calm the fuck down regarding Book of Life.

I understand you want animated movies starring POCs to do well at the box office. Hell, I've been wanting to see this movie for a long time, and social justice reasons is the least among them. But for gods sakes, Book of Life is not in danger of being the box office flop you're making it out to be.

1. You're aware that the US is still in a recession, right? If it's not Avengers or Guardians of the Galaxy or a related superhero movie, people will be more concerned about saving their money for their next meal or rent. They may see the movie, but they'll probably wait until it goes to the Dollar Theater first. Being poor does not mean we're actively conspiring to keep movies about POCs from being successful.

2. Movies make most of their money back globally; it takes time, even months or early next year, before they're released to other countries. According to one comment, Book of Life is actually doing pretty good now, currently at $47.5 million when I'm writing this. The film got #3 at the box office on its opening weekend, so this is nowhere as bad as say... Delgo.

3. Speaking of which, didn't the ads say the movie will come out on Halloween? Yes, it was released earlier, but ads are weird like that and lie. A lot of people may not even be aware it's out yet.

4. Frozen has nothing to do with Book of Life or its performance at the box office except that they're both animated. You're just making an excuse to be whiny and butthurt about Frozen's popularity again. ("DreamWorks isn't making enough money and Laika's probably shutting down, BUT YOU'LL GET A MILLION FROZEN SEQUEL SPINOFFS WAH WAH WAAAAAAAAH")

"Is this gonna be the new Frozen? Let me know now so i can get a head start on filtering it." <---- Best Frozen-related comment on the thread. XD

5. Guilt-tripping/shaming people into watching a film is NOT cool and can actually turn off potential viewers, especially when you trash things they already like.

I watched "Titan A.E." on a Livestream last night. Now there's a movie I haven't seen in years! I didn't remember much of it at all, but I enjoyed it a lot more than I did when I was a kid. I had a lot of fun with it! Yeah, there's the science fails and all that, but I was too busy being entertained to care. I love the characters and the banter/dialogue reminds me of "Firefly." Someone on Livestream compared it to "Outlaw Star," which I approve of. Plus the cheesy 90s soundtrack adds to the charm. :D

Jimmy owns both the junior and novel editions of the movie, I think. I'll have to check them out, especially since the latter explains some things that didn't show up in the film. :o

Speaking of Jimmy, he's constantly been at work lately and it makes me sad, starting to make me feel like Rebellion!Hitomi. Don't leave me for your metaphorical violin, Jimmy. ;;

I started volunteering for the Feral Cat Program at my campus. So every Thursday afternoon, I go and feed the kitties who live on the college grounds. Meow! :3

Other than that, I'm just feeling really restless. Jimmiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiy...

I like how the Cinema Snob does episodes of movies involving cannibalism, necrophilia, talking vaginas, coprophagia, pedophilia, bestiality, Nazisploitation, and E.T. porn without anyone batting an eye, but the second he does m/m gay porn like "Gayracula" or "Drive," the commentors immediately start questioning his sexuality. Lesbians are okay, and aliens are fine (as long as they're female), but gay men? "You can be a cannibalistic serial killer who fucks dogs and children, but if you're gay, god that makes me so uncomfortable!" It'd be just like the Snob to post another gay porn episode just to spite them. :D

Speaking of which, I got to thinking after watching his review of "Mommie Dearest." You ever been recommended a movie or book for its camp value and over-the-top hilarity, only to see it for yourself and be genuinely terrified and uncomfortable? I felt the same thing about V.C. Andrews' "Flowers in the Attic" and "My Sweet Audrina" that Brad did for "Mommie Dearest"; I expected something corny, trashy, and silly, but I ended up being creeped out and not finding any laughs at all. Albeit, FitA and MSA aren't great to begin with, but still. I had to stop reading both books because they were disturbing in ways I didn't like at all.

I guess I had a similar reaction to "Twilight" and "50 Shades" too. To this day, I never got past the first chapter of "Twilight" because I'd immediately get bored and pissed off at Bella whining that she got a fucking car from her dad. Though with "Twilight," I did manage to get a little bit of hilarity from the movie; I just needed a better audience (and Rifftrax) to watch it with. (I saw "Twilight" with my Mom and I wasn't allowed to make snarky commentary, which led to a dull, dull watch. I still laughed out loud at the SKIN OF A KILLER!!!1!1 scene though) But "50 Shades"... when it wasn't boring me to death, it frightened me and made me angrier than a bull at a firetruck. The only other book I can think of that incites this much rage from me is "Wuthering Heights." Just... ugh.

What do you think, guys? Have you ever been recommended something that's supposed to be trashy and So-Bad-It's-Funny, only to make you legitimately uncomfortable?

No! D:

I went to an animation Livestream yesterday, which showed a cute movie called "A Monster in Paris." There's two versions, the English dub and the original French, and we watched the latter with subtitles. It's got teeny bits and pieces of "Phantom of the Opera" and little homages to other films such as "La Belle et la Bête" and "King Kong" and a charming cast (for the most part. The chat booed whenever the annoying waiter showed up. XD), including the titular monster who is a giant flea and his only dialogue is in song during the film's musical numbers. He's so cute and timid and sweet! (And the chat squeed with me, of course) And his voice is gorgeous in French. Sean Lennon (John Lennon's son) plays him in the English version and he does fine from what I've heard of him, but I'm too spoiled by the original French actor, haha. XD

Here's the song he sings after we see his form for the first time.

Sorry for the Spanish subtitles, but this is the closest to high quality of the French version I can find. Anyway, the highlight of the movie is when Francoeur (aka the Adorable Flea Monster) and Lucille share a duet together:

La Seine (French version)

Watch it when you've got spare time, nomnomnom. I'm certainly glad I did. :D *adds Francoeur to the list of characters I've got to get icons of*

Racist crowd whines about Annie being black in the remake of a famous musical.

As someone who thought the original Annie was gag-inducing, this new version actually looks pretty cute. This comment gives me a little more hope for humanity (bolding mine):

This is really sad. And it's so sad that its even pretty pathetic from a purely literary perspective. In the original story the whole point of Annie being a red head was to show that she was less desirable than the pretty blonds and the smart brunettes. She’s a disadvantaged outsider who uses charm innocence and grace to win the cold hearts of the echelon elites. Only once the wealthy have recognized her value does she have any and a scandal ensues. That the producers of this latest production have used a precious little black girl in place of a red head to retell this charming fairy tale, shows they understand the concept perfectly. The story was always about the children we throw away. A black child has every right to stand there and play that role. It's a role about those confined to poverty and about how kindness conquers all. And what’s sad is that all those people crying about “white Annie” obviously missed the entire point of the story in the first place. And seriously guys, you can’t remake Roots with white people because that didn’t happen to white people and a fictional fairy tale is no where near on the level of a true political hero and any such comparison is born of silly knee jerk pride and reactionary ignorance. This movie is about little orphaned girls and orphans come from all of us.

*applauds* Well said. I'll be looking forward to seeing Quvenzhané Wallis this Christmas. :D

shamanicshaymin: Quote from Napstablook from Undertale (Elsa :: Freedom)
The snow glows white on the mountain tonight
Not a footprint to be seen
A kingdom of isolation
And it looks like I'm the queen

The wind is howling like this swirling storm inside
Couldn't keep it in, heaven knows I've tried

Don't let them in, don't let them see
Be the good girl you always have to be
Conceal, don't feel, don't let them know
Well, now they know

Let it go, let it go
Can't hold it back anymore
Let it go, let it go
Turn away and slam the door
I don't care what they're going to say
Let the storm rage on
The cold never bothered me anyway

It's funny how some distance makes everything seem small
And the fears that once controlled me can't get to me at all
It's time to see what I can do
To test the limits and break through
No right, no wrong, no rules for me
I'm free

Let it go, let it go
I am one with the wind and sky
Let it go, let it go
You'll never see me cry
Here I stand and here I'll stay
Let the storm rage on

My power flurries through the air into the ground
My soul is spiraling in frozen fractals all around
And one thought crystallizes like an icy blast
I'm never going back, the past is in the past

Let it go, let it go
And I'll rise like the break of dawn
Let it go, let it go
That perfect girl is gone
Here I stand in the light of day
Let the storm rage on
The cold never bothered me anyway

~Let It Go~

Why the Feminist Controversy Over Frozen Misses the Point

I wasn't worried about Disney taking enormous liberties with the storyline; that's pretty much expected. I knew that Frozen wasn't going to have much in common with The Snow Queen anyway. But what really grinded my gears with the unfortunate implications of DiSalvo's quote about animating Anna and Elsa.

If this article is true, it puts my fears about the movie to rest. Trying to keep two siblings look related while still having individual characteristics is a HUGE world of difference from "WAAAAH ANIMATING FEMALE CHARACTERS IS TOO HAAAAAAAAAAAAAARD!"

In other news, the family and I just got back from watching Catching Fire. Nomnomnom.

I think i know nowwhy so many people don´t like Titanic : The animated Movie.. I mean, not just because of the story and such... Since i´m doing a comparison between both versions ( cut and uncut) i noticed maaaaany animation errors... i might do a indepth article about it, to show how many things are just poorly done and how it would have been possible to make it a better movie ( yes, there wold be ways for that!)
But i´m really happy that the other titanic movies are now higher on your list then this one.

Yeah, it just occurred to me that the story is bad and the animation sucks (and traced), but the fact that it's BLATANTLY OFFENSIVE BY DISMISSING TITANIC AS A LEGEND INSTEAD OF A REAL LIFE TRAGEDY doesn't come to mind. Not at all.

So far, I've listened to the demos of the Raggedy Ann musical, and save for several eye-rolling moments, it wasn't as traumatizing as I was expecting. Mainly because it was just the songs and didn't have as much dialogue from the show itself. But then we get to the Broadway soundtrack, which is basically a live recording of one of the five performances before the show was canned. Now the creepy is hitting you on the head like a sledgehammer. I had to stop for a break after three songs (not counting the Overture) to comprehend what I just heard.

Now, the Mp3s are of low quality, and either way, it's very hard for me to pick up lyrics. I need liner's notes, I need lyrics sites, 'cause no matter how great my hearing is, there's some singers that I can't understand no matter how hard I've tried. And this musical is such an obscure failure that Google brings me nothing. But here's what I've been able to make out so far:

Guess what Marcella, you're going to die! :DDD )

I close this rant with an excerpt from How Not to Write a Novel (The Golden Harmony dub of "The Brave Frog" needs to learn from this too):

And I still have the rest of the musical to listen to. *weeps* Wish me luck, folks.
