omg guys guys. You know how Don Bluth talked about making a Dragon's Lair movie, but it got stuck in Development Hell?

This is your chance to make it happen.

Not only will this bring him back to the big screen, it'll give 2D animation another chance to shine. FUCK YEAH.

Jesus tumblr, calm the fuck down regarding Book of Life.

I understand you want animated movies starring POCs to do well at the box office. Hell, I've been wanting to see this movie for a long time, and social justice reasons is the least among them. But for gods sakes, Book of Life is not in danger of being the box office flop you're making it out to be.

1. You're aware that the US is still in a recession, right? If it's not Avengers or Guardians of the Galaxy or a related superhero movie, people will be more concerned about saving their money for their next meal or rent. They may see the movie, but they'll probably wait until it goes to the Dollar Theater first. Being poor does not mean we're actively conspiring to keep movies about POCs from being successful.

2. Movies make most of their money back globally; it takes time, even months or early next year, before they're released to other countries. According to one comment, Book of Life is actually doing pretty good now, currently at $47.5 million when I'm writing this. The film got #3 at the box office on its opening weekend, so this is nowhere as bad as say... Delgo.

3. Speaking of which, didn't the ads say the movie will come out on Halloween? Yes, it was released earlier, but ads are weird like that and lie. A lot of people may not even be aware it's out yet.

4. Frozen has nothing to do with Book of Life or its performance at the box office except that they're both animated. You're just making an excuse to be whiny and butthurt about Frozen's popularity again. ("DreamWorks isn't making enough money and Laika's probably shutting down, BUT YOU'LL GET A MILLION FROZEN SEQUEL SPINOFFS WAH WAH WAAAAAAAAH")

"Is this gonna be the new Frozen? Let me know now so i can get a head start on filtering it." <---- Best Frozen-related comment on the thread. XD

5. Guilt-tripping/shaming people into watching a film is NOT cool and can actually turn off potential viewers, especially when you trash things they already like.

Pumpkin Online Aims to Include Everyone, Everywhere

Pumpkin Online is a farming sim MMORPG, currently being developed as the debut project of Pumpkin Interactive. It’s being developed using the Hero Engine, and the basic plot bears strong resemblance to other farming sims like Harvest Moon and Animal Crossing, both of which the developer cites as inspirations. You create a character, select a profession, build your farm (and customize it, both inside and out), craft items, complete quests, and develop friendships and romances with NPCs. The game takes the farming/romance sim and the sword and sorcery MMO, mixes them up, and creates something huge and exciting.

What’s different about Pumpkin Online is the extreme freedom it provides. Monique Blaize, the team leader at Pumpkin Interactive, explains that as an African-American woman, “I’m a double minority in the game industry and I’m hoping to get involved in it.” Being aware of and sensitive to the need for minority representation in media, she has made every effort to make Pumpkin Online as inclusive as it can be.

The cast of NPCs is exceptionally diverse, meaning that there are several minorities among the characters. When creating your character, gender options include non-binary possibilities, and the choice of gender will not restrict any body features or clothing choices. Same-sex relationships are as present as opposite-sex relationships. The bottom line is, Pumpkin Interactive wants everyone to have the chance to play a character that represents themselves – something that the game industry does not always make possible.

I don't usually play MMORPGs, but I'd totally play this one. :D

Hullabaloo Steampunk animated film

James Lopez, a veteran Disney animator (The Lion King, Pocahontas, Paperman), is currently trying to raise money for his traditionally animated project Hullabaloo. Hullabaloo is a steampunk short film which Lopez is hoping will help save the cause of 2D animation, and possibly lead to a TV series or film. So, if you’re interested in badass steampunk ladies or traditional animation, may I recommend you give a dollar or two.

Saving 2D animation with steampunk and badass ladies? YES PLZ.

If I haven't been responding much, that's because I've been playing Tomodachi Life like crazy. I'll share my adventures later, but right now, I want to share all these QR Codes that have been piling up in my SD card.

First, an outfit for Animal Crossing:

Spoilers for Madoka: Rebellion? Idk )

I'm on hiatus from the game for a while, since I burnt myself out. I still have a ton of horror town visits saved on my SD card though, which I'll load later. I stopped playing the day before the hibiscuses bloomed, so I think that's the day I TT back to so I don't lose any of my villagers? The only dreamie I need left is Snake, and it would absolutely suck if someone like Stitches or Ankha moved. Especially my darling Marshie. ;; (Speaking of Marshie, I've visited both the creepy Marshal towns! I'll be looking forward to talking about those. XD)

My Tomodachi Life apartment isn't full yet, but here's all the residents I currently have on Koholint Island, divided by fandom:

It's one big crossover madness! )

Finally, we get to our first set of Tomodachi Life QR Codes~

Today, we've got Mother 1, Sonic the Hedgehog, and the Cinema Snob! )

Feel free to edit the characters as you please! Personalities, catchphrases, I don't care. Just have fun with them, and feel free to tell me if you're using them. :D

I hope I get armor for the FF characters soon. Characters like Golbez are kinda unrecognizable without it. :o

I went to an animation Livestream yesterday, which showed a cute movie called "A Monster in Paris." There's two versions, the English dub and the original French, and we watched the latter with subtitles. It's got teeny bits and pieces of "Phantom of the Opera" and little homages to other films such as "La Belle et la Bête" and "King Kong" and a charming cast (for the most part. The chat booed whenever the annoying waiter showed up. XD), including the titular monster who is a giant flea and his only dialogue is in song during the film's musical numbers. He's so cute and timid and sweet! (And the chat squeed with me, of course) And his voice is gorgeous in French. Sean Lennon (John Lennon's son) plays him in the English version and he does fine from what I've heard of him, but I'm too spoiled by the original French actor, haha. XD

Here's the song he sings after we see his form for the first time.

Sorry for the Spanish subtitles, but this is the closest to high quality of the French version I can find. Anyway, the highlight of the movie is when Francoeur (aka the Adorable Flea Monster) and Lucille share a duet together:

La Seine (French version)

Watch it when you've got spare time, nomnomnom. I'm certainly glad I did. :D *adds Francoeur to the list of characters I've got to get icons of*

In Animal Crossing news, Cookie threw a party for Queen Mary today, and Marshal and Skye attended the party too. I love you, Cookie. ;; Never change. ♥

I finally finished my English paper! Now I can curl up and dread my lab exam tomorrow morning. :P

The snow glows white on the mountain tonight
Not a footprint to be seen
A kingdom of isolation
And it looks like I'm the queen

The wind is howling like this swirling storm inside
Couldn't keep it in, heaven knows I've tried

Don't let them in, don't let them see
Be the good girl you always have to be
Conceal, don't feel, don't let them know
Well, now they know

Let it go, let it go
Can't hold it back anymore
Let it go, let it go
Turn away and slam the door
I don't care what they're going to say
Let the storm rage on
The cold never bothered me anyway

It's funny how some distance makes everything seem small
And the fears that once controlled me can't get to me at all
It's time to see what I can do
To test the limits and break through
No right, no wrong, no rules for me
I'm free

Let it go, let it go
I am one with the wind and sky
Let it go, let it go
You'll never see me cry
Here I stand and here I'll stay
Let the storm rage on

My power flurries through the air into the ground
My soul is spiraling in frozen fractals all around
And one thought crystallizes like an icy blast
I'm never going back, the past is in the past

Let it go, let it go
And I'll rise like the break of dawn
Let it go, let it go
That perfect girl is gone
Here I stand in the light of day
Let the storm rage on
The cold never bothered me anyway

Why the Feminist Controversy Over Frozen Misses the Point

I wasn't worried about Disney taking enormous liberties with the storyline; that's pretty much expected. I knew that Frozen wasn't going to have much in common with The Snow Queen anyway. But what really grinded my gears with the unfortunate implications of DiSalvo's quote about animating Anna and Elsa.

If this article is true, it puts my fears about the movie to rest. Trying to keep two siblings look related while still having individual characteristics is a HUGE world of difference from "WAAAAH ANIMATING FEMALE CHARACTERS IS TOO HAAAAAAAAAAAAAARD!"

In other news, the family and I just got back from watching Catching Fire. Nomnomnom.

Holli Wood: 67%
Jessica Rabbit: 33%

Good thing this one poll is the minority. Most people love Jessica and have never heard of Holli, and it should stay that way. :P

I think i know nowwhy so many people don´t like Titanic : The animated Movie.. I mean, not just because of the story and such... Since i´m doing a comparison between both versions ( cut and uncut) i noticed maaaaany animation errors... i might do a indepth article about it, to show how many things are just poorly done and how it would have been possible to make it a better movie ( yes, there wold be ways for that!)
But i´m really happy that the other titanic movies are now higher on your list then this one.

Yeah, it just occurred to me that the story is bad and the animation sucks (and traced), but the fact that it's BLATANTLY OFFENSIVE BY DISMISSING TITANIC AS A LEGEND INSTEAD OF A REAL LIFE TRAGEDY doesn't come to mind. Not at all.

I was wary about "Sofia the First" before ("Guys, she is totally Latina, even though her skin is as white as friggin' milk!"), but wow... this is not okay.

I tried the first couple episodes, but was very put off by Cinderella saying that when her stepsisters tore her dress apart after several years of abuse, she should've tried harder to understand their POV. The rest was cute, but I just didn't get into it. Sounds like I'm not missing out on much.

Nope. Nope. Nope nope nope. Nope nope nope nope nope nope nope. Nope. NOPE. NOPE NOPE NOPE. NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE.

...yeah, that is incredibly off-putting. I could maybe understand her regretting it if she had retaliated against them or forgotten them in utterly miserable circumstances and then later realized they were all screwed up by the stepmother; even then I would think Cinderella has a very generous heart. But you know Disney canon she doesn't retaliate and she's not leaving the stepsisters in bad circumstances--they lost out on the prince, big whoop, their chances were slim in the first place. (I suppose they're also out a servant, but you know, she wasn't supposed to be one...) There is absolutely nothing to regret about being upset when mistreated, or pursuing a chance to be happy when it finally appears. WTF, Disney.

Well said. Imagine if I had been young enough to be Sofia's target demographic. I bawled my eyes off as a kid when the stepsisters ripped apart Cinderella's dress. So what would happen if after I watched the movie, I saw that episode? Gee, I guess after being bullied in school for so long, if I had "tried harder to understand" the brats who made my life a fucking hell, they would've let up. There's nothing to understand. They saw a weird kid, and they decided to tease her for shits and giggles. Shame on Cinderella for using a sash and beads her stepsisters didn't give a fuck about anymore to remake her mom's dress.

I've been getting a lot of "Rise of the Guardians" dreams lately, and go figure, all of them involve Jack Frost in some shape or form. One of them featured claymation, and another featured a RotG video game humongously different from the one IRL. You play as different guardians, and you go around town mastering the elements. Like light beats darkness, fire melts snow, etc. There was even a "glitter" element where you could polish rocks and such and make them sparkle. You could even play as Pitch. Speaking of him, did you know that he had a daughter in the books before he became the Boogeyman? In my dream, the daughter is still around and works for her daddy, and at the ripe age of 12! It makes me want to write a book that has a villain-daughter team where the villain doesn't give a shit about anyone else but his daughter. And yes, the daughter's as evil as he is, no Heel Face Turns.

Too bad RotG is Dreamworks, 'cause it would've been a perfect world to play in in "Kingdom Hearts." I even dreamed that one of my friends became a Jack Frost/Sora shipper. And damn, I can totally see it. And it'll be one of the most popular slash ships in the fandom too.

I also had a dream where a Sonadow fangirl ripped off a eyeball-burning awful "Naruto" fanfic called "For Your Eyes Only." (Google it, then weep for all of humanity) All she did was replace the names, but sometimes she'd accidentally leave in the original names, like Iruka and Kakashi. The weird thing is though, that one of the yaoi couples she replaced involved Griff from SatAM. The fanfic author then spewed in random author's notes how much she hated him, and I was writing a rebuttal to that for [livejournal.com profile] hated_character. Which is funny, 'cause sometimes I thought about doing a post about him IRL.

Poor Griff. I love you, you Power Stone-stealing bastard.

I bought Kirby's 20th Anniversary the other day, so I finally got a chance to play "Kirby's Dream Land 2", the one major Kirby game I hadn't played yet. And Dark Matter is hand's down the hardest final boss in a Kirby game, not counting the extra bosses in "Kirby Super Star Ultra." Just OUCH. I've spent hundreds of lives on this guy like quarters in a "Ghosts & Goblins" arcade machine. I want to beat him once and for all, but the Wii is working weird right now. Augh.

I miss my computer. I hope I get it back soon.

I've started volunteer work at the Cattery yesterday! I'll be working there three days a week, with two hours for each day. I'll be making friends with all the kitties there~! ♥ God, it feels good to finally become a functioning member of society, even if it's not the same as a job that pays money. I couldn't be happier to get kitty scratches all over my hands, nomnomnomnomnom~ ♥

Sometimes, I think about becoming a director of animated films. Seems unlikely and impossible, considering people's viewpoints of animation (gdsgsdjg dammit Animation Age Ghetto and All Adult Animation is South Park!) and the lack of female directors in the industry, hell, lack of female directors in general. And hey, if cultural viewpoints and gender don't hold me back, ableism will. :/ The first animal shelter I tried volunteering at? The lady didn't think I'd do well simply because I "couldn't follow simple directions", despite said directions being vague as hell. But I still think about it from time to time. If she had told me her damn name, I wouldn't have to walk around the entire shelter trying to look for her. :/

Anyway, getting off-topic. I still fantasize about directing animated movies from time to time. And after thinking about this thread, it reminded me of a movie I considered making long before the Lorax movie with Danny DeVito was announced.

How would I direct a Lorax movie? Here's a little something I cooked up.

So, what did it take for Pixar to earn my trust again after "A Bug's Life"? Not much, actually. Nobody knew what to think when "Toy Story 2" was first announced. But when we got to the theaters, we were pleasantly surprised. It managed that rare, rare feat that only "The Godfather: Part II" accomplished... a sequel that was better than the original.

Persistence of Vision, a documentary about Richard Williams' quest to make The Thief and the Cobbler

Striving to make the greatest animated film of all time, visionary animator Richard Williams ('Who Framed Roger Rabbit') toiled for more than a quarter century on his masterpiece - only to have it torn from his hands. Filmmaker Kevin Schreck has woven together mind-blowing animation, rare archival footage, and exclusive interviews with key animators and artists who worked with Williams on his ill-fated magnum opus to bring this legendary story to the screen. A tale of creative genius gone horribly awry, PERSISTENCE OF VISION is the untold story of the greatest animated film never made.

I don't care if "Thief and the Cobbler" had weak plot/characterization/dragged too much/etc. There's some things I do like about it and I'd be lying if I said I didn't believe it was historically important to the field of animation. I am SO paying to see this when it comes out.

Why the Liar Revealed trope can eat a bag of dicks, especially in A Bug's Life. )

But let's be a little more fair. What would happen if I've seen "A Bug's Life" without all the emotional childhood baggage? What would I think?

*dundundun* )

So yes. Whenever people complain about "Cars" and call it the first "sucky" or "mediocre" Pixar film, I shake my head and point them to "A Bug's Life." It's an okay movie and while I'd prefer it over the likes of trash like "Cool World" and "Shark Tale", it's ultimately forgettable. And looking at it through the lens of nostalgia? Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaate.

Someday I'm gonna make my own ant story, and it'll take after real life biology and have the ant colony be a matriarchal society. Fuck yeah. 8)
