James & I were trolling each other a couple days before V-Day. I wrote half of a trollfic and it broken my brain, so I vowed to go home and write a remedy. Just in time for the holidays! So here you have it, a ficlet of my novel. If any of you are curious about my original writing, my bizarro novel of doom with Raggedy Ann & Andy, or the canon BL ship of my novel (Raggedy Andy x Marius) (the latter used to be "Miles" as a placeholder, but now he's got a rename token. Yay! :D), here's something short and sweet without needing to open an encyclopedia about Puriville. XD Plus it's fluff so there's no sex. XD Yay!

Quick Background: The plot of the novel revolves around Raggedy Andy trying to rescue his sister from the Big Bad, Dr. Medlock. Marius is an illusionist marionette who originally worked with Medlock, who discovered him after he was violated and locked in a box by someone he loved. As a result, Marius is distrustful, and later realizing Dr. Medlock had selfish intentions for Ann & Andy did not help matters either. Marius finds himself close to Andy in spite of himself, though he frequently brushes it off at first as infatuation. While working together after Medlock made shit hit the fan, Andy develops his own feelings for Marius and tells him so. This... begins an interesting relationship. It's got its ups and downs, but since one half IS Raggedy Andy, it will make your teeth rot. If you're not wibbling first.

This ficlet has no fandom, so anyone can read it~ ♥

You take me in, no questions asked
You strip away the ugliness that surrounds me
Are you an angel? Am I already that gone?
I only hope that I won’t disappoint you
When I’m down here on my knees

~ Sarah McLachlan "Sweet Surrender"

For a healthy portion of his life, Marius was known for dazzling audiences with his magic. It was his job, his purpose, to knock the crowd off their feet and leave them hanging. He had shown the toys what it was like to have a heart; to feel it beating, to feel their pulse race and their breathing constrict. For Marius to accomplish this, it took years and years of practice and hours of rehearsal to polish the performance. But to have the same effect on the magician himself, all Raggedy Andy had to do was hug him.

He owed it to stress. Unlike a ragdoll, marionettes weren't made to be held, not like that. Besides, the last time anyone held Marius was an experience that he wished he'd forget. But it wasn't that Andy was doing anything offensive, and Marius saw no reason for alarm... not anymore. The ragdoll laid his head on the marionette's shoulder, which reasonably tensed at first. Raggedy Andy knew as much as Marius that the magician would reject him if he so demanded; that he was as vulnerable as he was when it came to gestures of affection. But at this stage, it was all right. The marionette had given permission to hug him, however odd it might've felt to him. Even now, Andy didn't hug him hard, partly out of courtesy. When he did, it was always brief--out of the instinct that ragdolls were meant to squeeze and cuddle--when he sensed Marius's discomfort, he'd let go and look at him with an apologetic smile before returning with a softer embrace.

The adrenaline dissolved to a fuzz and the marionette hesitantly laid his hand over the radoll's. Like an audience willing to suspend disbelief, Marius was willing to believe Andy would be kind to him. But love him? From the beginning, the magician was convinced Andy's optimism had to be a fluke, that no one--let alone, a brother and sister--could be so caring without buckling under the weight of the horrors that surrounded them. After they were forcibly torn apart, Marius finally recognized Raggedy Ann and her brother for what they were... and weren't. They weren't blind. They were innocent, but not so innocent that they couldn't recognize anyone else's pain.

Raggedy Andy made it explicit that nothing Marius could say would frighten him off. You did bad things when you were with Medlock, but that doesn't make you a bad person. Everything that happened before you met him was not your fault. You did nothing to deserve this. No one does. It'll be hard for us, but we'll make it. Marius, I love you. And I won't leave you, no matter what happens.

Maybe I didn't deserve it, Marius thought, but I don't deserve you. To which he immediately imagined Andy responding, "Yes you do!"

Blast that peppermint angel.

The marionette jolted. He had been so busy brooding he'd been caught offguard when Raggedy Andy kissed him on the cheek. Short and simple. Yet it was like he had tasted a lemon drop for the first time. Marius was shocked, but it wasn't bad. He turned to Andy, seeing the concern in his eyes. ("Was that too much?") Wonder reflected Marius's own, reminding him of his days as an apprentice where he had seen his first illusion. Eventually, he learned the mechanics of the trick and performed it many times, so the initial novelty worn off. But perhaps there was a magic that kept on giving...

Marius took a deep breath, then he leaned forward and kissed Raggedy Andy. He brought his hands around the ragdoll's neck to calm him, stroking the strands of his orange yarn hair and the back of his blue sailor cap. While surprised, Andy was quick to accept him, applying pressure with the red stitch on his lip. Marius shivered at this odd ecstasy, allowing it to linger as he pulled the ragdoll closer. Marius pressed harder at the stitch than he could bring himself to believe... When they broken contact ("Was that too much?") Raggedy Andy stared at him and grinned.

"Do that again."
Marius couldn't help but smile too. "As you wish."
