Book Meme from
cattiechaos! :D
1. Favorite childhood book?
Matilda, nomnomnom. For a non-Dahl answer, Charlotte's Web by E.B. White. I reread that one over and over and over, and to this day, it's one of the few books out there that shows spiders in a positive light. I also loved The Velveteen Rabbit and Stellaluna. ;;
2. What are you reading right now?
The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde and Battle Royale by Koushun Takami.
3. Bad book habit?
Starting a book, reading the first few chapters, then get distracted by something else and then leave the book alone for months and months and even years. *sob*
4. Do you have an e-reader?
'Fraid not. It would be convenient to have though. More places to store books!
5. Do you prefer to read one book at a time, or several at once?
I read multiple books at once, but it's difficult for me to read simultaneously, so usually my concentration is focused on one book at a time.
6. Least favorite book you read this year (so far)?
50 Shades of Grey by E.L. James. *HEDGEHOG HISS FOREVER* Other than that piece of garbage, Raggedy Ann in the Magical Book was disappointingly dull. :( How do you screw up a story about dolls getting sucked into various fairytales? Oh, subpar illustrations and conflict erasure, right. :/
7. How often do you read out of your comfort zone?
Depends on the book I'm interested in.
8. What is your reading comfort zone?
Classic literature is always a safe bet. Usually I'm reading dystopias, fantasy (usually with talking animals) and psychological horror. Children's books are generally easy for me because they could be finished in one day. :P
9. Can you read on the bus?
No. Bus drives are short anyway, so I'd prefer to listen to music.
10. Favorite place to read?
In my room or at the library. :)
11. What is your policy on book lending?
Return it when you're done, and keep it in good condition. And don't lose it!
12. Do you ever dog-ear books?
Heavens to Betsy, no! DDD: I hate it when there's folds or creases in my books, and I tend to "unflop" dog-earred books and try to flatten the pages back to normal.
13. What makes you love a book?
The characters, engaging prose, awesome ideas that are fleshed out to meet and/or exceed their potential.
14. Favorite reading snack?
I don't eat often while reading, 'cause I'm afraid of getting food marks or stains on the book. I might keep a drink close by, though. And I think I may have had an apple or string cheese.
15. Name a case in which hype ruined your reading experience.
I was rather underwhelmed by The Hunger Games. I thought the movie was better. :/
16. If you could read in a foreign language, which language would you choose?
Japanese, so I could also understand manga and doujinshi. :)
17. Most intimidating book you've ever read?
American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis. I haven't even gotten to the rat scene yet, but I'm dreading it. DDD:
18. Most intimidating book you’re too nervous to begin?
The Stand by Stephen King. I hear it's one of his best works, but dear god, it's huge. D: Also IT because of three reasons: A. Length. B. Scenes of animal abuse and murder. C. I don't want to read a door-stopper only to discover the Big Bad's "true" form is less intimidating than his clown one AND ends up getting defeated in the most anti-climatic way possible.
19. Favorite Poet?
Edgar Allan Poe, nomnomnom~ ♥
20. Favorite fictional character?
Oh Jesus, you're making me choose? D: Um... Matilda and Alice (Alice in Wonderland, Through the Looking-Glass) come to mind. Lots of spunky children's heroines, nomnomnom.
21. Favorite fictional villain?
Dear god, Annie Wilkes from Misery. Margaret White from Carrie. Any of H.P. Lovecraft's Eldergods. And definitely, definitely A.M. from Harlan Ellison's I Have No Mouth, And I Must Scream.
22. Books I'm most likely to bring on vacation?
Kind of cheating since they're anthologies, but I don't care. Tales of Mystery and Imagination by Edgar Allan Poe, and The Complete Works of Oscar Wilde. :3
23. The longest I’ve gone without reading.
I'd rather not keep track. :P
24. Name a book that you could/would not finish.
My Sweet Audrina and Flowers in the Attic by V.C. Andrews. I just can't get into her books; they're too unpleasant for me. Knowing what happens later in the former does not help matters either. *hedgehog hiss*
25. What distracts you easily when you’re reading?
Internet, real life, other books.
26. Favorite film adaptation of a novel?
Maurice. ;;
27. Most disappointing film adaptation?
The Witches, because they changed the fucking ending.
28. Are there any books you’ve been avoiding?
House of Night, Halo, Hush, Hush and the rest of their misogynist ilk.
29. Name a book that made you angry.
Wuthering. Fucking. Heights. The "Flower Garden" story from Shirley Jackson's short story collection. Searching For David's Heart. Any book that romanticizes abuse.
30. A book you didn’t expect to like but did?
I was worried that The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath would be too sad for my tastes, but it ended up becoming one of my favorite books ever. Another big one is Haunted by Chuck Palahniuk. Extremely disturbing and graphic book, but I loved Palahniuk's raw writing style and original, strange stories. I didn't expect much out of Howl by Allen Ginsberg since I was a naive college student expecting your usual poetry from high school, but boy was I in for a surprise. :o
31. Favourite guilt-free, pleasure reading?
I prefer children's books over YA. Raggedy Ann is hit-or-miss (becoming more "miss" after Gruelle's death), and I like the older books best. But they're simple and relaxing and colorful, and I could use a break from the gritty stuff from time to time.
