Talk about ten different things that most readers of your writing would never know or have noticed if you had never told them. This can be applied to both original fiction and fanfiction. It can be something as simple as an obscure literary allusion, inspiration for a scene or an entire story/ficlet, etc, or as complex as... well, just complex. Even just a 'why I wrote this' type of thing or something about the execution of a scene is fine. Just so long as it's something a reader would either never know or would have to have a very good eye to catch. If you can't come up with ten different things, try to come up with as many as you can.
Not really "secrets" but... eh. XDDD;;;
#1. Among my ten kajillion influences, I write being inspired most by music or movies or books or magical moments in my life: any of my favorite things. If you ask me what authors influence me, I'd shoot right back from the get-go: Roald Dahl & Edgar Allan Poe. I write from the heart, I write from the imagination, I write to express myself, I write to be a friend, I write to be a storyteller, I write out of passion, I write to share my love for things. For life. Cheesy? Puri doesn't care. Puri can't comprehend writing out of hatred or an angry grudge. She can't. Puri could go on and on why she wants to be a writer, a novelist, a future classic author--but that would definitely make this answer longer than it really should.
#2. Puri kinda uses multiple methods when it comes to her writing. (Mainly 'cause Writer's Block and laziness loooooooooooove to attack Puri. XDDD!) While mainly a "seat-of-the-pants" writer and improvising as she goes along, Puri's also orderly--it's beginning to end, baby. She HATES skipping scenes and writing outta order. The one exception is when she's going back in a fic (or chaptered fic) to rewrite scenes, which often result starting over from that scene until she catches up where she left off--which is a fucking pain in the neck. @.@;;; (*shakes fist at Chapter 3 of her Secret*Fic*) In extreme cases of Writer's Block, Puri outlines--or rather, jots notes and ideas and such so she can get a clearer picture of what she wants to do. Definitely doesn't always work, but it's something productive. Sometimes she switches mediums too and "transfers", the writing being editted and MUCH better once it's on the compy. Puri's dabbed fic into the following: Microsoft Word (obviously), various offline journals/dairies (often transfered and "translated" onto Word), Semagic, LJ Update Page, even Wordpad--and damn. Makes me wonder if I should scribble fanfiction on NOTEPAD for kicks for crying out loud. And if her ancient creative computer games haven't combusted, you'd have to wonder what a Kid Pix Studio version of the Secret*Fic would be like. XDDDD! Just imagine all the goofy embarressing music/sound effects at the Sonadow parts... ^^;;;;; UNLESS I can manage to add my own stuff in there... hm... *rubs hands plotting evilly*
#3. If Puri had a themesong for her writing process (or heck, a themesong for herself in general), it would be "Experimental Film" by They Might Be Giants, hands down. 'Cause though it's slow and I can't explain it... I already know how great my stuff's gonna get. ;D Also, I tend to get pretty secretive over my fanfiction and ideas until I've written them, tending to share only with trusted friends. Why? You know when you have this great idea and people scoff ya going "Ugh! That's never gonna work." it's quite a stomper. XDDD;;; Heck, for this question, I'm gonna go right ahead and give ya guys free music to think of me by. ;D
They Might Be Giants - Experimental Film
Enigma - Push the Limits (Secret*Fic)
"Push the Limits" isn't nessessarily specific about the Secret*Fic's plot, but it does add a central core to it in that it follows along in my head with the previous two songs from the Sonic Adventures: "Open Your Heart", "Live & Learn", "Push the Limits". Also has a serious/machine-ish army feel, so viola. XDDD;;;
Basic instincts, social life
Paradoxes side by side
Dont submit to stupid rules
Be yourself and not a fool
Dont accept average habits
Open your heart and push the limits
Open your heart... (Open your heart...)
And push the limits (And push the limits...)
#4: Remember when I said I was heavily inspired by music? Indeedie do, I am! If it weren't for my CDs or my Winamp list here, some scenes in my fanfiction--if my entire fanfic at ALL--wouldn't have existed. I'll never forget the day "10th Man Down" by Nightwish randomly played and broke me out of serious months-old Writer's Block in Chapter 4 of CWCR (aka ancient cancelled Mariofic). @.@;;; Point to me any of my old fanfiction. Chances are, I can point out a scene and remember the EXACT song that I had on repeat at the time I was writing. ("Oh yeah! I played "Theme of Tikal" at the scene Peach appeared and I was describing her nightgown and her walking in the moonlight and...!")
#5: Puri ♥♥♥♥♥♥s symbolism. Seriously. Puri throws it around like confetti whenever she could. Some symbols are obvious and don't require a brain cell to figure out--others require squinting--and the rest are so obscure that only Puri knows where
#6: That said, the Secret*Fic is LADEN with allusions to "2001: A Space Odyssey". *SHOT'D!* Long before HAL stepped into the picture though, I already thought of P.A.N.D.O.R.A.'s character: I already had a role for Eggman & Metal Sonic in my fic, so I needed to create a villain so I didn't have to randomly bring a bad guy back from the dead or anything lame like that. Since GUN already executed sinister roles well in 547289762 other fics, I wanted to toy around with something different. It sure as heck wasn't gonna be a shallow Slut*Kitty Mary-Sue "IN DA WAY OF SONIKKU ADN SHADOUZ TWU WUV O NOOOOOOOOES!!1!!!111!" Dude, this is gonna be an epic fic. I wanted someone that isn't JUST the danger of our two favorite hedgehogs, but someone the entire planet had good reason to worry about too. In other words? Someone who is ACTUALLY a true threat.
As I was starting to write, a game called "Paper Mario 2: The Thousand-Year Door" occupied my attention. I entered the room as Peach, and was introduced to TEC: a supercomputer. BINGO. I had found my villain. (Believe or not, PANDORA and TEC are nothing alike. XDDD!
One of these days, as soon as my magnum opus of a fanfic is FINALLY finished, I'll be working on a sprite comic (or something. XD!) documentary, detailing aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaall the behind scenes and development of the Secret*Fic from beginning to middle to bloody end. *________________* Wish me luck, fellow gentlemen!
#7. "Sooooooooooooo Puri! What are your thoughts on
But I won't lie and say I'm an "Anyshipper" though. 'Cause there are some ships, no matter how incredible and fuzzy a fanfic can make me, that I just plain can't stand. XDDDD! Not to say I spend my life hating ships--dude, you I'd rather spend my time fangirling and it's not worth the energy to froth at ships I don't like. :P But there's ships that I can't bring myself to support AT ALL, even if they prove to be a cure for cancer. Aragorn/Legolas anyone? XDDD! (Gimli/Legolas forever!) *ARROW'D!* I also can't bring myself to support incest or shota/lolicon. Not exactly my cup of coffee, you know? (I don't mind canoncest though, like Amiboshi/Suboshi from FY. *nod*) And while I may be a bit centric on my boyluff these days (to which I blame gay hedgehogs for. XDDD;;;) But Het? Yaoi? Yuri? BRING 'EM OOOOOOOOOOOON~~~! I never liked those darn love triangles either... bring in the OT3 baby! :o
#8. Next question: what types of ships does Puri prefer? It aaaaaaaaaaaall depends on the characters. *nod* And of course, what their interactions were (or what WOULD be) like. Fandom and fangirls are secondary: I never "hate" a ship because of a horrid fanbase, mainly 'cause I find fandom to be fickle and shallow (the fandom can explode, but the original games are still there) and I expect people and their "fics" to suck anyway. XDDD! My motto? "Love the ship: hate the fanbase".
However, if I spend time with a good friend or there's an author that wrote a story I reeeeeeeeeeeeeally liked, consideration and/or inspiration comes for said-ship-Puri-once-gave-no-thought-on, and possible brainwashing/corruptiveness might occur and Puri's got another ship to support and a banner to sail. Not always, but it happens. ;D
*AHEM* Back on topic! XDDD;;; Lesse... I tend to like the "Strange But True" pairings. Aka, a ship seems NUTS at first glace. So are the characters, possibly. If it happened in canon and the others knew about it? Heads. Would. Explode. So it's weird right? Yet you watch them and think "Oh my god... it's SO obvious they're together." The delicious subtext, the funny interactions, you find yourself growing on them if you haven't before. It's also about looking into the characters and what matters most--so what if Wario isn't pretty as Sephiroth or Gackt or any other "pretty bishounen" out there? Mona still loves him. ;D
I also spot a taste of "ZOMG TEH IRONY" in my ships now and then, as a twist from the expected. Shadamy and Sonadow anyone? XDDD! I also like fluffy ships 'cause I'm a sap, and I LOVE watching them work together in the face of adversity. 'Cause unlike sappy Harlequin gag-inducing "perfect" couples, the Fluffy Ones don't deny angst and darkness exist--which makes 'em more endearing and sweet than ever that no purple prose would EVER capture. ;DDD Kirby/Ribbon, Geno/Mallow, Mario/Peach are particular ones that make me "AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWwwwwwwwwwwww~~~!" like the softie little loser I am. ;DDD
What Puri doesn't like? "Leftovers". *shudder* You know, when eeeeeeeeeeveryone else is shipped up... "LOLZ THESE TWO R SINGLE LETZ PAIR TEM TOG3THR 4 NO R3SON WHATSO3VA!11!1 OTP!!!111111" No, no, no. Ew, ew, ew. Here's a shocker for ya: Shadow & Blaze have NEVER met and have virtually no chemistry. :D:D:D Don't get me started on Auron/Rikku either. Just...
NO.
Puri also never felt close to one-sided ships, 'cause like "Daaaaaaw... let's give Character A what he/she wants!" and it's too much of a "Pity Ship" to me, especially if Character B expresses no interest whatsoever in return. (I'll admit--I'm a sucker for one-sided Peach/TEC & Peach/Twink. But only if it stays one-sided. So it sorta halfway feels like gen there... XDDD;;;) Hence, Puri's heart never bled for Sonamy or really Bowser/Peach. It's when fanbrats are all "ZOMG SONIC LOVES AMY THEY ARE THE PERFECT COUPLE!!1!!111" and declare them as OMG CANON in the games (Sonic X aside) that has Puri pull her friggin' hair outta rampage and such, but whoa. Another rant for another day. @.@;;;; Other minuses include "Ships of Destiny": aka, pairings brung out of the blue BECAUSE OF ZOMG DESTINY. Screw it if they never interacted or developed an existing frequent relationship: YOU'RE GOING TO ACCEPT CHARACTER A/CHARACTER B AND YOU'RE GONNA LIKE IT!!1!!!111! Again, the Shadaze thing when people thought Blaze was gonna be Shadow's love interest. @.@;;;; I dunno, I hate when I have ships gagged down my throat with a spoon. Poor example, but... I don't think I can get into Roxax/Naminé just because they're Sora and Kairi's Nobodies. :P ZOMG SORA/KAIRI OTP, THEREFORE ROXAS/NAMINE OTP!!11!1 ...Nope. Gotta convince Puri more than that. :P
But yeah. Comes all the way down to Puri Motto #2: "When it comes to ships, they're adored or ignored. Or squee'd to death. It's aaaaaaall good." ;D
#9. ...I never shut up, do I? XDDDD;;; But yeah. I do have bunnies for original fiction. Always have: I'm plotting them as I speak. What I despise though, is when I try to show people my fanfiction, and instead of actually READING my work and congratulating me for something I pour as much blood and sweat over as my original stuff, people raise their eyebrows and say, "Why geez, why aren't you writing REAL fiction? You're worth so much more!" I want to crunch their heads with my fist. Um GEE, thanks for caring so much about my writing! The ONE time I shared original writing I believed I was excited for, that I didn't feel was absolute crap or embarressment or a school assignment I'd rather never see again, I was criticized. They were appalled and shocked, and insisted that I should rewrite it "THEIR" way, nevermind the heart and soul I put into the thing and... it was a disgusting experience.
But my dream still stands: I want to be a novelist. I want to write about the things I love: fantasy, supernatural, science-fiction, animals... what makes me happy, and for me to share it with readers across the world. I want to be someone special, a classic, someone to touch people's lives and for the next generation of wonderful writers to gain their influence and inspiration from. I sure as heck dunwanna churn anything hackneyed or deritive like Eragon--no formulas for Puri, no Tolkienesque wannabe am I. I want be remembered as Giselle A. Roberts~ ♥♥♥ Now and forever. ;D
#10. Okay, last question. ("We're free! We're free! ...Dangit!") What characters does Puri adore writing about most? It all depends, though it's obvious Puri loves writing about her favorites. *nod* I write about characters in a fair/balanced/neutral standpoint--nobody is bashed, nobody is glorified, no matter WHAT Puri thinks of a character IRL. I don't deny when I have fun with a character, though--I'm addicted to writing about Shadow. 'Nuff said. Waluigi and Daisy are also ridiculously fun together for some reason, and... I can't keep count. There's a LOT of characters I have fun writing with. @.@;;; And ten kajillion MORE I want to write about/write more often, like Blaze, Cream, Maria, the Chaotix, etc. etc... I dunno. Usually when I write about a character I don't expect to focus on more often, that's a buncha fine. I like experimenting and toying around with new things and tactics. *nodnod!* You said it too--does wonders for Writer's Block too. XDDD!
Annnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnd everybody's asleep but me. XDDD;;; Ah well. Gotta sleep for The Morning tomorrow anyway. *nodnod!*
But before I go: decent Geno/Mallow fanfic. I swear to hell, it's not by me. oO;;;; And--And THIS! "Implied light Kooper/Parakarry." OH. MY. FUCKING. GOD.
I couldn't believe it. I discovered fanfiction for two of my rarest OTPs and they're good. After I finished the second one, I wandered the rest of the first page of the Mario section like a kid who found two 25 dollar bills on the ground, hoping there was more...! Until I realized there wasn't any more and that the Mario section was the same boring droll as ever. But oh my gosh...! I knew there was a reason I still kept waddling back to FF.net. *______________________* But yeah, I'll be cradling these gems. Desperately. And think of how lucky I've become that day.
