The latest episode of MLP: FiM makes me a happy, happy soul and I found myself cheering. Talk about an anvil that needed to be dropped! ilu Fluttershy. ;;
Inspired bybecky_barrett, I'll step off from my Pokemon hiatus for a while to talk about Sacredshipping, aka Morty/Eusine. One of my all-time favorite Pokemon ships, those two make me fuzzy inside. And it's safe to say I like Eusine too. But this is the part where I differ from the majority. I love Sacredshipping, but not in the Anime, because I can't stand Anime!Eusine.
This is my Pokemon history: I played G/S, but not Crystal, because I was disappointed you couldn't catch Celebi like you could in the Japanese version. (And I was more interested in Celebi than Ho-Oh and Lugia, goddammit. D: Though I got Gold version 'cause I was all, "Hey, that's the Pokemon Ash saw from the first episode!") From the Crystal art, I thought Eusine looked like a jerkass. Coupled with what little I knew about him (his obsession with Suicune), I thought he'd be a clone of Jirarudan from the second Pokemon movie and wasn't too interested in him. In some idle years around when I started becoming more interested in Pokemon shipping, a friend dug up some old icon on her journal showing Morty and Eusine from the Anime. I heard the two of them were friends in the games and had an episode together on the show, and I thought, "Hm, maybe there is something going on between them." I didn't think more of it until HS/SS came out.
Eusine wasn't what I was expecting him to be like at all. Yes, he was still obsessed with Suicune. But while other sort of Pokemon characters like that saw their wanted Pokemon as a tool, Eusine fanboyed Suicune and showered the Pokemon with love and poetic declarations, and I found his enthusiasm to be endearing. Even in the end when he realized he wouldn't be the one Suicune chosen, he congratulated the player, putting Suicune's happiness before his own.
I loved the idea of Morty and Eusine having moved on from their favorite legendaries, but finding what they wanted and had all along without needing to chase or wait for it.
From that point on, I shipped Morty/Eusine. Hard. So one day, I decided to see what the fuss is about and looked up "For Ho-Oh the Bells Toll!" on YouTube. I've been gravely disappointed.
Anime!Eusine was exactly how I feared he would be when I looked at that Crystal art years ago. Unlike Jirarudan, who at least had some class, he was an arrogant prick. I'd shrug it off he was like this in the games too, except I didn't get the impression from his dialogue in Crystal (which isn't known for characterization like HG/SS) that he was a jerk at all. It gets worse. Even in Crystal, Eusine clearly stated that he wanted to earn Suicune's respect. So in the Anime when he tried to catch Suicune, not only was he a bloody hypocrite, it was OOC for him. Game!Eusine would never have dared to do something like that, especially if he wasn't sure if Suicune had chosen him. He'd have known right away that if he had thrown a ball, Suicune would've disregarded him as unworthy and he would never regain his dignity to ever receive a second chance.
Anime!Eusine is abusive towards Morty and it's horrible. You know that "nice" cap where Morty holds Eusine's shoulder? The very next second, Eusine jerks away and bitches at him. Morty shrugs and leaves, unsurprised like it's happened a million times before. I just get an uncomfortable feeling from watching them, since Anime!Morty had been portrayed as kind and patient on the show, and you want to reach out to him and say, "Dude. You deserve so much better than this. DUMP YOUR SHITTY FRIEND FOR GOD'S SAKE!" Even referring to Eusine as his "ex" makes me feel ill. This is not how I imagine their relationship at all.
I preferred Special!Eusine. He was a Large Ham and a melodramatic drama queen and that was fun. He's still full of himself, but in a way that's hilarious. Though he and Morty don't really get to interact much, it's clear that they're good friends who respect each other, and that makes me happy. Much more accurate to the games~ ♥
Of course, guess what fandom's favorite interpretation of Sacredshipping and Eusine is. :/
I know HG/SS hadn't existed yet and more people are familiar with the Anime and take inspiration from it, but still. I don't see what makes Anime!Eusine so "fascinating." To me, he was no different from the bully CotDs like Damian (the guy who abandoned Ash's Charmander in the rain) and the guy-unhealthily-obsessed-with-Legendary-to-the-extent-of-exploiting-other-trainers had already been done by Jirarudan. He's an egotistical hypocrite who treats his best friend like he's not worthy of breathing the same air as him. It comes down to personal taste, but usually I do NOT like characters like that. I just can't stomach that kind of Eusine. You know how in some Morty/Falkner fic where Eusine is set-up as the Evil Ex/Evil Friend/Whatever? Die For Our Ship!Eusine is basically Anime!Eusine. Yeeeeeah... goes to show how shallow Anime!Eusine is for me. :/ My Eusine is the hopeless-but-passionate dreamer from HG/SS. It's who I relate with better and the kind of person I'd rather write about.
Anime!Sacredshipping... I'm just sick and tired of abusive BL/yaoi. In the case of Morty/Eusine, you don't need abuse to make their relationship fun and "interesting". They've got plenty roadblocks on their own without Eusine being a bully. :P I picture the two of them having a normal relationship. Well... as normal as two men who train Pokemon, study legends, and get ambitious as hell about a rainbow chicken and a blue dog can get anyway. ;D
