Things That Have Never Happened in the History of Fandoms:
Person: Ship A is bad bad bad! You should like Ship B instead, it's much more wholesome and romantic!
Person 2: You're right. I have seen the errors of my ways. I like Ship B now, I don't know what the hell I was thinking with Ship A!
Strap in, I'm getting bitchy about antis in Deltarune fandom.
I like Swatchton and Spamvil. I do. But you know what? I love Spamtis even more. It's my favorite ship right now, not just in Deltarune fandom. But good fucking god, I am sick of the moral fingerwagging every time I look into the shipping and smut tags. I could come across a cute Swatchton art before I check the artist's profile and they're like "Spamt*s shippers DNI" and their Twitter feed is full of rants about how disgusting Spamtis shippers are and omg why can't they like a nice wholesome ship like Swatchton instead? I find some fun Spamvil smut, which immediately gets spoiled when they launch into tirades about Spamtis shippers being pedophiles and bemoan the lack of "unproblematic" ships like Spamvil. Why ship Spamton with Kris when Jevil's right there?
Aside from the fact that antis believe they have moral superiority over others depending on the type of glitchy puppet porn they draw.
Here's why "Don't ship A, ship B!" doesn't work:
1. Multishippers exist. The question of "Why ship A when you could ship B instead" flies over our heads because we'll just be like, "Why not ship both?"
2. It assumes Ship A is all evil and horrible while Ship B is pure and wonderful. Put a pin in that, I'll expand on this point later.
3. It assumes all ships and characters are the same and that they're some commodity you can swap. Spamton does not have the same relationship and chemistry with Kris as he would with Swatch or Jevil. It's like if you're trying to paint a fence and someone bitches at you for painting it white instead of pale blue. It's not the same color.
4. If someone is on the fence about Ship B but loves Ship A, guess what? Bashing Ship A while extolling the virtues of Ship B over its dirty Ship A shippers is a surefire guarantee that they won't ship Ship B, and may even come to resent it. Name one kid that stopped eating sugary sweets and started chomping vegetables the first time their parents told them chocolate was bad and they should like broccoli instead. I'll wait. It's almost like shitting on something someone loves will make them uncomfortable or pissed off and unlikely to listen to you or something.
I can't tell you how exhausting it is to be a Spamtis shipper surrounded by antis. It doesn't matter if Kris is in their last year of high school and likely to attend college soon. It doesn't matter if you headcanon their age to be 16, which is the age of consent in some countries and (gasp) certain American states. It doesn't matter if you ship Spamtis when Kris is older or age up Kris (which antis believe makes you worse for some brainbreaking reason) If you ship Spamtis, you're automatically a pedophile. It doesn't matter if you ship it in the most wholesome manner possible. You see two traumatized individuals rejected by society who discover love and acceptance in each other? You see two characters robbed of their independence and yanked around by forces outside their control who find solidarity in each other? You see two characters struggle with eldritch forces beyond their understanding who make them question reality and their place in it, then they finally meet someone who not only believes them but is saddled with the same situation? All that is negated because of an age-gap. All you care about is whacking off to children, plain and simple.
"But Puri! Even if we don't take ages into account, Spamtis is some creepy shit! Spamton literally tells Kris to meet him in a dark alley alone, then tries to kill them and steal their soul! Then Kris is so freaked out after their battle they actually scream. Even if they do somehow bond, this could lead to some fucked up codependency where they refuse to ever let each other go."
You know what? You're right. That does happen in the game. And their relationship could easily spiral into that scenario. But I'd argue that's part of the beauty of Spamtis; they're so versatile they can be sweet or disturbing or in-between. Here's the thing: my problem isn't that antis call Spamtis "problematic." Of course it is. Any ship can be if you twist it enough. It's the moralizing around it that pisses me off. The idea that if you like problematic ships, ooooooh, that means you're problematic too! You must endorse abuse and dysfunctional relationships in real life! Apparently, you can like as much gory horror movies as you want, but the second it turns sexual, "Oooooh, you're getting off to it! You are bad bad bad!"
But here's what really grinds my gears. Whenever Swatchton and Spamvil shippers shit on Spamtis, they go to great lengths pointing out how wholesome and perfect and healthy their ships are. Swatchton and Spamvil are "unproblematic" and something is wrong with you if you're not drawing/writing them.
Swatchton and Spamvil? If you look at the context in the game, they're literally hateships.
Swatch makes no secret of their disdain towards Spamton. They view him as a nuisance and they likely may have been the one who dunked him in acid. They stolen Spamton's bowties and sell them with the tags cut off. As for Jevil, Spamton is terrified of him. He made Sweet Cap'n Cakes cancel building a themepark because he "hates clowns." Spamton sounds jealous as fuck when he talks about the "clown around town" and vows that he'll usurp him in success.
I'm not saying this makes Swatchton or Spamvil bad. Quite the contrary. But the way antis whitewash those ships and claim that they are "healthy" and "unproblematic" while declaring Spamtis has no redeeming values is fucking ludicrous and hypocritical. What, just because there isn't an age-gap (And yes, you're still a pedophile if you ship two adults with an age-gap) means abuse and coercion can never happen? That because both characters are already adults without aging up means they'll be feeding each other tea and cookies (no poison!) with no strife whatsoever?
I'm tired. I'm fucking tired. When my own government would rather coddle a ball of cells and leave me to die in a ditch somewhere, the last thing I need is fandom dictating what my preferences should be and calling me a villain for not following along with their contradictory rules of what a "moral" person should be.
