There's a lot of Cuphead fanfiction I want to write, so I'm going to be jotting down my headcanons for future reference. They may change over time, but hey, I don't expect all hcs to be permanent. Enjoy reading!
Goopy Le Grande
- I've seen a gijinka of Goopy as a clergyman, which I thought was really cool. So my thoughts are he used to be a famous boxer, but after learning it was starting to impact his health (even blobs can suffer from head trauma and injuries!) he retired. He missed the fame he had while he was a star, so he struck a deal with the Devil to keep in touch with his fans. This goes about as well as you'd expect, but nonetheless, Goopy remained optimistic and good-natured despite the awful shit happening to him. Post-Cuphead good ending, he became a full-on dedicated clergyman and has a much happier life for himself. And yes, if you try to fuck with him, he still remembers that uppercut.
The Root Pack
- While Chauncey Chantenay, Sal Spudder, and Ollie Bulb are their official names, they're still sometimes nicknamed "Moetato," "Weepy," and "Psycarrot"/"Psy" by their peers. So all names are used, yay!
- The Root Pack is a Found Family of immigrants fleeing poverty, famine, and colonialism in their home countries. They were each all alone and separated from their biological siblings and parents, so they agreed to work hard and stick together for their new life in Inkwell. Radish was a plucky orphan they caught trying to steal from them, and they adopted him into their group so he would no longer be hungry and lonely.
- Chauncey is the unofficial "leader" of the group, with him being the oldest and most experienced farmer. He calms down Sal, Ollie, and Radish when they get too agitated, and is the best at negotiating financial decisions. I'm not sure whether his psychic powers are something that is passed down or given to him by the Devil--either way, he uses them to predict the weather and prevent his crops from being ruined by natural disasters/disease outbreak/etc.
- Sal is cranky because no one takes him seriously. As a gijinka, he'd be the shortest and have a Napoleon complex. Despite his short temper, he has a heart of gold (insert Golden Potato puns here) and regards Chauncey and Ollie as his brothers and Radish as his son. He gets pissed off if you make Ollie cry, though in the game you don't see this because you already defeated Sal first. :P
- Poor Ollie has separation anxiety and is a sensitive boy in general. ;; He's the kindest and most empathetic of the three and an expert pacifist, as shown in his battle if you don't attack him. He's shy and blushes easily, and you can bet he's crying during all the emotional parts in books and motion pictures. He's surprisingly good at parenting and is the one Radish feels closest to, which is why he pops up to attack you in Ollie's stead. XD
- Radish is a stubborn fucker and has a glass jaw. XD In exchange for being adopted, he aids his three daddies with farming and carries his own trowel for digging. He's best friends with Wally Jr. and is awed by the inventions he makes.
- Chauncey's ancestors and grandparents are purple carrots, in reference to older carrots being more commonly purple before orange carrots were bred in favor of their sweeter taste.
- The Root Pack turned to the Devil during a rough season where they were close tocannibalizing themselves starvation--Chauncey, Sal, and Ollie were present to sign the contract together, but deliberately left Radish out of it so if the Devil came for their souls, he'd leave the kid alone. That's why Radish is absent in earlier versions of the game and only pops up if you spare Ollie.
- They sometimes butt heads with Cagney Carnation because he's a punk, haha. XD They do get to be friends with him post-game though.
Optional Orange Composte hcs
- If Cagney retires being a gang leader, Chauncey and the rest of the Root Pack help him adjust to normal life and teach him how to run his own farm. (Cagney even starts keeping rabbits 'cause he's a softie) Chauncey and Cagney develop a senpai/kohai relationship along the way which blooms into something more.
- Chauncey and Cagney have an age gap that is more obvious when they're humans: Chauncey is in his late 40s-early 50s while Cagney is in his early-to-mid-20s. Why the age gap? Because I say so, that's why. And I love the idea of rebellious punk Cagney learning to calm down by someone wiser and more experienced like Chauncey. :o
Ribby & Croaks
- They say it for themselves: "Crude and bad, 'cause we're from the wrong side of the lily pad," and "We've had fightin' souls since we've been tiny tadpoles." Growing up in a swamp isn't easy, but what if you grow up in a swamp equivalent of Detroit? Hoo boy. It ain't just mosquitoes you gotta worry about, there's a hell lotta gangsters and guns too. Transformation is a necessity if you want to bounce bullets off your skin.
- After Goopy Le Grande stepped down from boxing, Ribby & Croaks became the new stars of the ring and an iconic duo. They proclaimed that they could beat anyone who challenged them... the Devil took them at their bet, and they lost.
- As a gang leader, Cagney Carnation sometimes hires Ribby & Croaks to be bodyguards to protect clients. They're dang good at their job too.
Next time is Cagney and Hilda, and I have a lot to say about them. :o
