Anyone who refers to Sylvia Plath's poetry as "emo" will be strangled until their entire head turns blue.
First, way to trivialize her poetry. Second, way to trivialize depression and suicide. When I was myself a teenager, I felt like I couldn't talk about my problems. Want to know why? Because I was frightened of being dismissed for having "teenage angst." For being "emo." I've been made fun of for both of those things. And it hurt. A lot. To the point where I almost took my own life.
Note to self: do not read the comments on Youtube videos involving Sylvia Plath. You'll come across ableist bullshit and ignorant statements like "hurr hurr, only sad teenage girls like Plath" or "she's only famous because she committed suicide/is pretty/married Ted Hughes" or "*insert insensitive comment about what a selfish whiny idiot Plath is for committing suicide*"
Look, I'm not part of a goddamn cult that encourages suicide. It's a horrible and tragic thing. I encourage people to find help because their lives and themselves are worth it. But don't dehumanize Plath because she made the choice to end her life. Depression is not easily curable and doesn't go away with positive platitudes. So fuck you.
