So I discovered the Michael Sporn Animation Splog and like... storyboarding and concept art galore. It's oddly surreal for me, so to say. I think the artists and animators on my flist would be interested in leafing through the entries. Good stuff. :o

I came across this article called Keane Posing. Mainly talks about Glen Keane and how his poses have become more cliche lately and that the poster wasn't that pleased about the animation in Tangled, especially in comparison to the art book, etc. but that's not the part I'm concerned about:

Several of these female characters showed their spunk and advanced their Independence. In Tangled, Rapunzel goes after what she wants but doesn’t create her own fate, in the end. The male does. One expected it would be the wicked stepmother, but no, it’s the Prince … er Robber/Thief/Scoundrel. Inadequate. This is a film for 14 year old girls, and we see that they’ve seen it this past weekend, but they’re given the wrong version of the story.

OBJECTION!

First off, wat. What what. WAT.

Talk about reading into a scene WAY too much.

First off, you want to know what happened? Throughout the whole thing, Rapunzel's been struggling against her personal freedom and her allegiance to her stepmother. Was the guy blind to Mother Gothel's treatment of her stepdaughter? How depracative and smothering she was? ("Look in that mirror. I see a strong, confident, beautiful young lady. ...Oh, you're here too.") Oops, I forget. Eugene/Flynn is the male love interest, and he's confident, so clearly he's a selfish rapist. Essentially, you're mistaking him for the stepmother, who not only dictated Rapunzel's life for her own monetary gain, she not once saw her as a daughter after all those years, seeing her only as someone with hair that can make her young forever. "Oh no! My treasure" as opposed to "My daughter! Where is she? Is she safe? Is she hurt? What have you done to her?" WAY different story from the Witch in Into the Woods, who genuienely DID care about Rapunzel and loved her and truly did want to keep her safe from the evils of the outside world. Misguided? Yes. Tearjerking? Definitely. Listen and weep. But yeah, derailing off-topic here.

The scene in question? Basically, Rapunzel learns she's the missing princess and that the whole "Eugene/Flynn ran off with the crown and left her" thing was a trick set up by Mother Gothel. Gothel uses Rapunzel to blackmail Eugene/Flynn to return to the tower. She stabs Eugene/Flynn with a fatal wound and Rapunzel begs to heal him, with the promise that she'll be faithful to her stepmother for the rest of her damn life. Earlier in the movie, it's shown that if Rapunzel gets a strand of hair cut, it loses its magical properties and turns brown. That's why she never left the tower in the first place, since people cutting her hair = people taking away her gift and dumping her when she's no longer useful. Mother Gothel keeps Rapunzel--translation, her hair--safe, so she wouldn't be used or controlled by anyone except her stepmother. Lovely. So what's the big choice Eugene/Flynn made to "steal Rapunzel's indepence FOREVA!!1!1" anyway? Basically, before she gets the chance to heal him, he picks up the knife he was stabbed with and cuts off her hair so the stepmother has no control over her. Because Rapunzel's hair is what she's been depending on to stay alive, Mother Gothel shrivels up into ashes and dies.

In short, Eugene/Flynn gave his life to Rapunzel's. Literally. "ZOMG BUT IT TOOK A MAN TO TELL HER SHE COULD BE FREE!!1!1!" Oh shut up.

Yeah, He Got Better. But how was either he or Rapunzel supposed to know that her tears had restorative quality to them? Which makes you wonder why Rapunzel didn't just cut her hair earlier (intimidation?) but I guess Eugene/Flynn didn't want to risk the stepmother yanking her away the millisecond he's healed.

Tangled is far from being the best Disney movie (I liked Princess & the Frog better. :P) and I didn't care for the few songs that were in the movie (except for maybe the number with the thugs dancing in the bar, but eh), but it's still cute. Hell, I cried when he cut her hair. That should tell you something.
