Day 3: A game that makes you really happy

Mother 1+2 aka Earthbound Zero & Earthbound

Nothing warms my heart quite like those two games. Everytime I pop the Earthbound cartridge in my SNES or run EB0 on the emulator, I find myself grinning from ear to ear. Why? I'm not afraid to call these two games masterpieces. They've got everything I could possibly ask for in a game and more. I'll do my best to explain, but gosh. I got to say, it's incredible.

In both games, they're RPGs that take a different twist on a tired old genre by setting the story in modern-times instead of medieval fantasy (EB0 in the 80s, EB in "Year 199X" respectively). You have your mother and sisters and dog at home, and call your Dad on the phone so he can deposit money in your ATM and save your progress. You're a regular kid with psychic powers off to save the world from an alien named Gyiyg (Giegue in EB0, Giygas in EB), while collecting melodies and visiting sanctuaries and visiting a kooky cast of characters along the way. Believe me when I say it's bizarre; instead of imps, you fight runaway dogs, smoking crows, and hippies. Yes, hippies. The enemies in the games are varied and exciting and even the NPCs are insanely fun to talk to, mainly because they're so self-aware they're in a video game that it brings the lulz. Golden pieces include the Onett police whose claim to fame is blocking roads, the librarian who gives you the map, and well... Noodlenoggin Ninten. Hee. :)

The games have a sense of humor, which is awesome. But they also have heart and a ton of touching moments, such as the Magicant sequences. A journey of smiles and tears. Did you know that the logo for EB0 is "No Crying Before The Ending"? Damn straight. Heck, the logo for Mother 3 sums up the entire series in total: Strange, Funny and Heart-Rending. The Internet is not kidding about the nightmare fuel either. Stuff like Mu Training and the final battle with Giygas come so unexpected it's... wah. DD:

It's safe to say that I love everybody in these games. ;; Well, except maybe Pokey, but you can't deny he's a great villain either. :P In EB0, you've got an asthmatic named Ninten, a bullied genius named Loid, a sweetheart with a hat and pigtails named Ana, and a gangster with a heart of gold named Teddy. For Earthbound, you've got Ness (who gets homesick and misses his mother if you don't call her. :o), a girl with killer black mage-esque psychic powers named Paula, BADASS INVENTOR Jeff Andonuts, and a serious prince excelling in martial arts named Poo. Yep, just like you fight hippies as enemies, you have a party member named Poo. That's part of the magic of this series. ;D

Mother 1 + 2 also has my favorite music in any video game series. Stuff like Onett and Fourside, Flying Men and Eight Melodies, Bein' Friends, Pollyanna, All That I Needed (Was You) and waaaah. ;; This big grin comes to my face the minute I hear these songs randomly pop up on Winamp or my iPod.

In short: EVERYBODY PLAY THESE GAMES. YOU WILL BE GRATEFUL AND LOVE ME FOREVER. You can't go wrong with a series of games inspired by the Beatles.

What about Mother 3? That's reserved for tomorrow...
