Sex education. No seriously. It's bad enough that a lot of teens are shooting themselves trying to figure out sexuality. Abstinence-only has done nothing to teach us about our bodies except to be ashamed of them and that the only way to take responsibility is to not have sex at all. Except after marriage to make babies, 'cause if you enjoy sex for any reason other than reproduction, you're a whore or a manipulative rapist. Infedility? What's that?
It really helps knowing how to have safe sex, including learning about the difference methods of birth control and the advantages/disadvantages of each. Hell, learning how to fit a condom correctly will make a TON of difference. What's an abusive relationship and what isn't? What do you do about pregnancy and STDs?
To quote the title of a Garbage song, Sex Is Not The Enemy. We can't keep blaming our problems on our genetalia and we need to take responsibility for our actions and decisions. It would've really helped me to be taught about some of the things the Internet had to educate me on, when I hated myself for having fantasies of some of my OTPs because supposedly sex was something horrible people did to manipulate and degrade others like in lame misogynistic pr0n0s.
No, your skin won't turn purple if you masturbate. If it does, see a doctor.
See? Whether you're sexually active or not, knowing this kind of stuff saves lives.
Alas, since we're still so entrenched in the stereotypes of men and women and the whole gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgender debate, I don't expect this to go smoothly for a loooooooooooong time. :/
