So after finishing my annotations (save for opinions, which should be easy anyway), Puri couldn't stand it anymore and set up DivX to watch the subbed version of Giratina and the Bouquet of the Sky, aka Movie 11. After the knife-throwing disappointment of Destiny Deoxys, Puri had critical and hopeful expectations that the Shaymin movie would kick ass. I want to make it brief, so here goes:
- Gorgeous opening! I like seeing all the different Pokes in different terrains. And you gotta love the classic shot with the woman sitting in the park with all the Eeveelutions! It reminds me Seurat's Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte. You'll recognize it when you see it.
- I love that the very first thing they show me is a running and sneezing Shaymin in the grass~ ♥
- Gah. Only reason Dialga is here is to draw allusions to Movie 10 and have Giratina chase him for the ZOMG EPIC SEQUIL!!!11!1 with Palkia vs. Dialga vs. Giratina vs. Regigigas vs. Metapod. Chances of us seeing the characters from 10 and 11? 0.001% Shame. Graceland and Tonio could geek out (Tonio being Graceland's apprentice, of course. :P) while Shaymin snubs and harasses Baron Alberto. XD Movie 11 works so perfect as a stand-alone film, dammit. D:
- I ADORE SHAYMIN. That's a given. But god, I love her as much as Mewtwo and Lucario because they all share such amazing development! She's a frank and assertive little brat who's a fighter and vulnerable without falling into the Invincible Legend or Cute Damsel-In-Distress categories. She matures at the end and comes to be fast friends with everyone ( I'm grateful to you all! ) while still being the snippy smart-alack we love her for. Just gosh, I love her. And her voice is so cute! ;; I'm scared they'll make her sound too squeaky or obnoxious in the dub. XDDD;;;
- I loved how balanced everyone's roles are. It's even acknowledged poor Brock gets constantly left behind, but you always feel his concern and support. (While in Movie 10, it's like, huh? Where did Brock come from? XD) There's not too many NPCs, and thus Mugen-san Graceland gets all the development required (more on him later), and the nice train passengers don't follow Ash and gang around uselessly like a pack of sore thumbs who should've left earlier. Plus Joy in glasses! Yay! :D
- Zero... I'm neutral to him. I just wish he'd tweak his outfit so it's not so goddamn tacky. X.X Like I dunno, get rid of the rings around his hips. Or something. Seriously, it's distracting. He's Soldier Blue and Xemnas's test-tube child whose fashion sense matches the smoking caterpillar from Alice in Wonderland. @.@;;; Infi's a much prettier sight; let her be the villain while Zero is the hologram(s). :P
- I love the dynamics Shaymin has between Ash and Dawn. Again, the relationships are balanced and Shaymin gets plenty of screentime with both Diamond/Pearl protagonists without spotlight being hogged by the other. (May? Movie 9? We're looking at you. :P) Shaymin is cheery and snuggles in Dawn's arms, always smiling and being nice to her... while with Ash, Shaymin is the complete opposite. XDDD! It's hilarious. She totally makes Ash her bitch and constantly abuses him by yanking his head around indecisive directions (on purpose!), puffs smoke at Ash's face ( Don't worry! I don't do it to nice people~ ) and even says later the reason she stays with Ash so much is so he will be eaten by Giratina along with herself. Naturally midway in the movie, Skymin and Pikachu become perfect partners. Ash never cries at the end when a companion leaves except when they're dying, but here, he stays with Dawn as they were both close to Shaymin, and wiping his eyes, shouts, Don't get lost! Awwww. T.T
- Ash & Shaymin interacting is the funniest I've seen in the PokeMovies since, oh... Dub!Movie 2/Pokemon 2000? You should be grateful! >( Hahaha, Shaymin gets away with everything~ ♥
- I like that Giratina had actual drive and that she was vulnerable, unlike shallow killing machines like Rayquaza, Dialga, Palkia, Legendary Birds sans Lugia, etc. so I like her more out of the Big Beasties. I like that she wasn't ZOMG BROUGHT BAK FROM DA DED!!11!!11 like it was stupidly done with Darkrai. I found it more touching Skymin devoted all her energy to saving her life and succeeding. I wish after Pikachu and Skymin climbed up Gira's body that it moved on to Gira returning to the Reverse World and the Shaymins come to the blooming Glacidea garden aka the Last Scene of the Movie. It would've been the perfect length for a Pokemon film.
- But no. Pulling the Just Fucking Give Up Already!! card borrowed from Rayquaza in Movie 7, Zero just refused to die and stay dead. Albeit, it wasn't NEARLY as annoying as it was in Movie 7 and had cool scenes like Giratina forcing down the pole of Zero'sArwing ship and Skymin delivering the kickass final blow, but was the whole glacier stuff necessary? Only to add extra minutes, show off more of Zero's incompetence as I'm stuck here squirming in my seat knowing the end of the film is way past due by now. @.@;;; Major minus of Movie 11, so that notched some points off for me. :(
- The people on the train were really nice. And *gasp!* The obese woman is a sweetheart instead of a stereotypical bossy snob! The passengers also weren't idiots and kept out of Ash-tachi's way as they punched out the Magnemite family, and even gave them directions to finding the Glacidea Field. :o Not only do we get to see the beautiful woman share her Glacidea bouquet with her grandma and family, but Delia (Delia! I missed you Delia! T_T) Johanna (Dawn's mom), and Brock's siblings got bouquets too. I thought that was very sweet. :)
- The boat scene is my favorite, with all the Pokemon playing. It's so cute and carefree and gorgeous in crystal water between giant cliffs! ;________________;
- I love the Reverse World. It's like an alternate dimension that's watching you from the mirrors and has an unsettling Yume Nikki-esque vibe to it: it's dark, quiet, strange and frightening, but after you make your way around, traveling this land becomes a bizarre and familiar second-nature to you. This especially shows when Graceland guides Ash-tachi through the different gravity levels of the paths. :o
- I don't remember his full name (Professor Mugen-san Graceland... I know I'm inaccurate. XD), but oh gosh, I love Graceland the Hippie Professor. I am tempted to draw an I Am Legend poster with him and Shieldon walking with the ice and stone columns in the background. But gosh, is he so well-rounded...! I think he gets my Supporting Pokemon NPC of the Month award. So a professor makes a big mistake. He could pull a Dr. Fuji, Gerald Robotnik, or George (Earthbound 0) path and go insane and die. But rather than sit and watch his past assistant muck things up, Graceland takes matters into his own hands to revert the crisis he's taught Zero to do and make things right. (And succeeds: he shut down the whole airship right when Giratina was a single percentage from death). With all the Officer Jennies and police cars, Graceland forgiven Zero and reached his hand for him from his icy tomb... which Zero accepted with sincere respect. Because Graceland is that fucking hardcore. I have to find and upload an icon of him later.
- Regigigas: Hey guys! Am I late? Robotic Treebeard, for all his limited footage, did coin in a badass performance. He stood up there like Gandalf the White Covered in Moss, summoning an entire army of Mamoswine fit for the battle in The Two Towers to shove back the sliding glaciers. One of the few cool parts in the Zero-decides-to-drag-the-movie-too-long minutes. Also, Regigigas didn't seem afflicted when Zero's busted Arwing landed on him. Did it slide off or what?
- ONE is a cute little poppish song about gratitude and friendship. Sweet song, fits well with the scheme of the movie, so I'm good. :) WHY IS TOMMY-FEBRUARY'S L-O-V-E-L-Y BOY NOT IN TWINBEE OR ONE OF HEDGIE'S KOGEPAN PRODUCTIONS? IT WOULD'VE BEEN BETTER IF IT HADN'T BEEN SUNG FOR A WHINY LITTLE BRAT FRIGHTENED OF POKEMON, POKEMON TRAINERS, MAGIKARP AND FLAMINGOS. *cough* But I digress.
The Shaymin movie gets 7/10 from me~ ♥ I want to make an AMV tribute to Shaymin already, that's how pleased I am. :o
