Conversation between Mom and I. Interesting how a simple topic can get you somewhere else:
Me: Ooh, Flowers in the Attic. I wanted to read that.
Mom: I dunno... I never liked child abuse...
Me: Me neither.
Mom: There was this story...
Me: Yes?
Mom: There was this psycho... he took his daughter, and locked her in a room with no windows, strapped her to the toilet seat... never talked to her. At all. Know how long he kept her there?
Me: No...
Mom: Thirteen years. The neighbors never even knew he had a daughter. People only just found her.
Me: ...
Mom: You know how you develop language as you grow older? Well, since it was never used, and no one talked to her... she's completely incapable of speaking. You can't teach her language--they tried when they found her.
Me: ...
Mom: Can you believe that? Taking your own daughter, taping her to a toilet seat and isolating her... that's NO way to treat a child. *she flips through the T.V. scheduale again* Jaspar, Texas... I used to live five minutes from there. You know what happened?
Me: ...What happened?
Mom: These guys, they were driving--and along the road, they found this mentally-challenged--you know, "retarded" black man--they grabbed him, took him to the end of the truck and left him dragging there... you could see his entrails on the road and everything. And this is a hate crime.
Me: ...Oh god...
Mom: He was black. So they dragged him, five minutes from where I used to live...
*reads description of the movie based on the event*
Me: It happened in 1998... that's a few years ago, isn't it?
Mom: Yep. Around when your sister was born...
Me: ...
Wow. And I was about to complain about something trivial like immature, stuck-up Anti-Sonadow people or something. Like, that's NOTHING compared to... just... fuck.
I hate people. Humanity needs to die.
