Jun. 21st, 2009 06:00 pmIt's hard to explain why our dreams are so unsettling sometimes. It sounds silly, like say, "A fanfic writer extends every worse situation possible and forces us to sit through it while suffering with the characters." Kind of like a serial killer movie, except subtler than that. There isn't any blood. But dear fucking god. If THIS isn't disturbing... I've been perturbed by this one scene in my dream all day.
The author has Pikachu go through a gigantic waterslide. There are no gaps and openings except for the beginning and end. The author uses his omniscient powers to squeeze the water slide like the paper bag. He goes into graphic detail of Pikachu being tossed about and drowning, such as what's happening to his body and the pressure he's experiencing as his organs and brain and nose feel like exploding. At the end of the water slide, Pikachu hacks and coughs, but the author refuses to let him get a breath, and smacks him back down again. Pikachu has become a flat husk with sunken (bulging?) black eyes whose limbs can fall apart like wet paper. I remember holding him and sobbing, and rewinded the dream in hopes of saving him (especially since I was convinced Pikachu was still alive when he came out of the water slide, and would have survived if the author wasn't insisting on clamping his mouth shut) but each time he'd freeze into that horrid image and there was absolutely nothing I could do.
Interesting how sword-through-the-chest doesn't much affect me, but suffocation and drowning does. Hell, I'm too scared to drown anyone in video games on purpose, even if it's something silly like Mario. It frightens me. The paper bag thing does NOT make things better either.
