Geez, the way Ceroba’s detractors talk about her reminds me of how people complained about Sayaka from Madoka back in the day.
“I would NEVER inject my daughter with serum after being explicitly told by my husband not to!” Good for you, you’re a completely logical person who has made that decision while not under emotional duress. And you’d TOTALLY be logical under duress too! The funny thing is, outside all her actions that involved her grief and Chujin’s past experiments, Ceroba is what you’d call a “logical” person. Someone who would look at the situation from the outside and think, “There’s no way I’d do that.” And yet, she still fell prey to those mistakes. Because even “logical” people can fuck up and make stupid decisions while under duress. Chujin was another “logical” person under duress who did the same thing.
I dunno, people like this are precisely why characters aren’t allowed to make mistakes in mainstream media anymore. Case in point? The Avatar LA show. Everybody has to speak in exposition, everybody has to have a logical reason behind what they do. Aang isn’t allowed to be a kid, he must stay focused on the mission because anything else isn’t “sticking to the plot.” Aang isn’t allowed to run off after being told he’s the Avatar, he must “leave to think for a while.” Yet the show-runners want their cake and eat it too by toning down Aang trying to escape his responsibilities as the Avatar, but have everybody wag their finger at him for doing so as though they hadn’t changed that plot point.
There’s something ironic about people claiming they despise AI, yet they want characters to act like AI. Also, the fandom hypocrisy regarding complicated characters (especially female ones) will never not be fucking tiring. “wE wAnT mEsSy FeMaLe ChArAcTeRs” Then they hem and haw at all Alphys and Ceroba’s mistakes, and decide Lisa and Buddy are somehow worse than all the literal rapists and pedophiles in the game they’re from.
