shamanicshayminOn a less whiny negative note, I watched two really good movies with Jax: Donnie Darko and Come and See. I humongously recommend them. ;;
Dang, after being familiar with the Gary Jules version of "Mad World" for so long, it sure hits differently when listening to it in context.
So one thing that popped out to me about Donnie Darko was, "Damn, this really calls out anti rhetoric." It calls out the hypocrisy of a lot of anti ideals; like you have a character named Kitty Farmer, a Karen who screeches that a short story is "pornographic" and should be banned from being taught in class because it's about several kids who break into an old man's home and destroy it. One of the characters is later revealed to be a pedophile, and she's determined to prove his innocence despite the police finding his entire dungeon full of CSA material. She and the vast majority of town also have zero problems with Sparkle Motion, a dance troupe consisting of prepubescent girls (including Donnie's little sister) who are sexualized and groomed, and they think it's cute and adorable. Donnie even gives a fuck-you speech to the pedophile and calls him the Antichrist. Earlier, he also called out the teacher following the pedophile's shallow Motivational Speeches, explaining that the world is not easily divided into black and white.
On a side note, I instantly related to Donnie when he ranted about the Smurfs. This is exactly the kind of obscure autistic nerd shit I talk about. <3
Come and See is a Soviet film and is considered one of the best and most horrific war movies ever - they are NOT kidding about this. Surprisingly, there's rarely any on-screen violence; just the reactions to said violence, the aftermath, and the impact it has on everybody involved. In a weird quiet way, it actually makes everything that's happening so much worse. There's this surreal psychedelic feel throughout the movie that always has you on edge - even when nothing is happening, the tension is dragged out as long as possible and there's no escape. You just have to ride it out through to the end, because what else can you do?
Everything that happened in the movie is based on something that happened during WW2. It shows you exactly what fucking monsters the Nazis are. Yet even as we watch our 14-year-old protagonist become a broken husk by the end, the movie still ends on a note of hope, and he and the partisans still have their humanity intact.
It can be watched in its entirety on Youtube with subtitles. That's how Jax and I watched it. :o This should definitely be a movie they show in schools.
