Mario & Luigi 2: Partners in Time
Looking at the cover art, I knew something was wrong since the beginning: Mario babies. Yes, those darling little brats from the Mario Kart games. Not to mention Baby Mario's screaming in Yoshi's Island is definitely something I want to put on loop in my iPod. But hey, it's Mario & Luigi. It'd still be a fun game, right? Wrong.
This should be called, Mario & Luigi: Babies Ever After. It's not time travel at all so much as it is Mario & Luigi travelling back and forth between a dimension where everyone else exists as babies. It makes no sense. Mario & Luigi aren't supposed to meet Peach yet and first come to the Mushroom Kingdom after Bowser's already kidnapped her for the first time. For some reason, it adds to a squick factor that Mario, Luigi, Peach and Bowser have known each other since they were frickin' born. Also, if they take the babies from their "present time" and bring them with them to the future, wouldn't it mean they've destroyed their damn future? Shouldn't they implode upon meeting each other? (Yes, I know they don't implode in Mario Kart but let's face it, they race Bowser like they're good buddies too) The gameplay and story are nowhere near as charming as the first game. Kylie Koopa's all right, but other than that, I just don't give a fuck about anyone in this game. Princess Shroob is goddamn Oprah Winfrey. Yeah, that's intimidating. She sucks.
The best parts of the game are fleeting as hell. The l33t-speak Hammer Bros. lasts five seconds. Star Hill is gorgeous, but it's late in the game and all I have to do is wait for someone to make a sprite sheet of it so I can look at it anytime. The fact that this game ends is another good point. But I can't be bothered enough to finish it after going so far and getting stuck. Why should I care? What's in it for me? Especially if the ending is likely to be as crappy as the first one.
Don't you just love it when Baby Peach opens her mouth? Her bawling makes the elder gods thrash in their watery sleep.
This game is so fucking bad it made me skeptical about Bowser's Inside Story. I'm sure it's a good game and all, but something about playing the game inside Bowser's body requires too much for me as far as suspension of belief, even for me. Especially since it's supposed to be better than PiT (which isn't saying much, any Mario RPG game can be better than PiT) but not as much as Superstar Saga doesn't leave me with a lot of confidence.
