*applauds HARD* YES. True Art Is Angsty pisses me off so fucking hard. And your rant under the second cut is exactly what made me roll my eyes at Cori Falls!Jessie rather than feeling sorry for the Poor Widdle Abused Angel. Conflict and angst can make a good story, but not if it's piled on and crammed down the reader's throat.
Take Francie Nolan from A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. She's poor. Her dad drinks. She has a shitty time at school when she starts out. She gets groped a few times and nearly raped. She loses her father, the parent she loved most of all. She gets her heart broken by a guy she loves. And yet she's still sympathetic because the writer doesn't beat us over the head with her ~aaaaaangst~ and lets her earn that hopeful/happy ending.
