Today is Father's Day, so I'm gonna be quite busy. But first, I wanna ramble about a little horror game called "Ib."
The first ending I got was theFOREVER ALONE.JPEG "Ib All Alone" ending, 'cause I was kind of cautious of the giant painting at the ending. Nothing much happened except fade-to-black, so I got back to my last save and tried again. And got the "Together, Forever" ending. Which made me mad because I was furious with Mary for killing off Garry and I had his lighter and I wanted to avenge him. :( ("He loves me... He loves me not..." "MARY YOU SON OF A BITCH") Apparently I had forgotten that I had to burn the vines. I restarted from a save where Mary asked me which two people I wanted to live (my main save was "with Garry", and I had two separate files for "with Mary" and "I'll stay behind") and tried again, since my main file didn't give me the option to look for my rose when Mary pushed Ib and Garry into the toy box. So I had no choice but to watch Garry sacrifice himself and aaaaaaaugh. D:
Dear lord, the "Forgotten Portrait" ending is so sad. ;; I got the "Memory's Crannies" ending from one of my alternate saves before that, though. A much more satisfying ending. :P But as I kept checking the walkthrough, I realized that I could get one that was even better. :o So I got "Promise of Reunion", aka the Handkerchief Ending, and got filled with the warm fuzzies. Having Ib and Garry remember everything is much more awesome~ ♥
From my own interpretation of the game, I see Ib as a normal-but-brave girl that got stuck in an extraordinary and frightening world. Not that there's anything wrong with dysfunctional protagonists like Madotsuki/Urotsuki/Sabitsuki/etc, but it feels refreshing that Ib is just a regular kid trying to get home. She's quiet and probably shy, she has nightmares of the horrors she has experienced thus far, she's genuinely concerned about her parents (as evidenced by the "portrait" of them and her "Mom" trying to coax her to stay with her inside the painting in one of the endings) and she treasures her friends a lot. ;; (The way she hugs Garry, how she tries to slap him out of it when he's possessed by the creepy dolls/rabbits, and how a manifestation of Garry tries to make her stay with him if she defeated Mary in one of the endings)
Her relationship with Garry makes me wibble. ;; BFFs for life. ♥ I friendship them so friggin' hard.
Speaking of which, the game definitely has its disturbing moments worthy of "Yume Nikki" and ".flow." I cried out at the little things like when a shadow was banging on the windows or when one of the Lady paintings breaks out and crawls after me. D: The worst thing, though? Has to be the room where Garry gets stuck with all those ugly blue dolls. You have to find the key and you're timed, because the center painting goes friggin' Sadako on you. AN UGLY SCRAGGLY WARTY BLUE SADAKO IS SLOWLY CLIMBING OUT OF THE PAINTING AND GO AFTER YOU. The first time, I failed, and the screen went red on me. D: So I restarted 'cause I wanted Garry to be alive. Aaaaaaaaaaaugh. DDD: *hedgehog hiss forever*
This game gives me another reason why I need to finish reading The Picture of Dorian Gray. 'Cause I'm getting plot bunnies of Mary and Dorian (maybe even Henry or Basil) meeting for some reason.
If you're interested, you can download "Ib" here. I suggest avoiding my LJ-cut until after you beat the game, 'cause you wouldn't want to ruin the surprise~
