shamanicshaymin: Glorious beautiful Shaymin against a flowery backdrop. (Emolga :: Knocked Out)
Ugh. Today was so awful I don't even want to discuss it. Good thing today's Meme Question is appropriate.

Day 4. A song/artist that never fails to make you cry

Sarah Brightman - Once in a Lifetime. (Not to be mistaken for a Talking Heads cover) Sounds cheerful and relaxing, right? Wrong. Wait 'til you read the lyrics. I rarely listen to this song, simply 'cause it always leaves me "DDD:" when I listen to it. Same with The Queen and the Soldier by Suzanne Vega. And Mary by Oingo Boingo is a story I can relate to all too well. D: The Sun is Often Out by Patrick Wolf, written for a poet friend's suicide, is very pretty, and there's one line that haunts me: Is your work of art so heavy that it will not let you live?

I remember someone on the Internet saying 90% of Sarah McLachlan is sad. This is somewhat true. XD Ben's Song, Vox, Lost, Mercy, Fallen and When She Loved Me come to mind for me. Just... crap. D: And I listened to Elsewhere all the time when I was depressed as a teen, nom.

Nine Inch Nails - Something I Can Never Have. Gray would be the color... if I had a heart. Ouch. I remember the first night I listened to The Downward Spiral from beginning to end. When Hurt finished, I sat there on my bed with my headphones... speechless. I felt like someone punched me in the gut. Then it did it again through the Man in Black. I don't know which version I find better, though I might lean toward Cash. It really depends on the occasion. They make me cry. 'Nuff said.

Finally, The Kick Inside by Kate Bush. Based off the Ballad of Lizzie Wan. In the original, a sister is killed by her brother after he learns she's pregnant with his child. In this version? The sister kills herself to spare her brother the shame, and this song is her suicide note. Considering the dire subject matter, I keep playing this whenever I think of Raggedy Ann & Andy in my novel. They're not incestuous and it got nowhere as bad as it did in Lizzie Wan, but considering it's an inevitable "spoiler" that Raggedy Ann is going to die and Andy deals with a lot of grief (Ahh, grief and death. A HUGE theme in my book) this song keeps popping into my head whenever it can. (This kicking here inside makes me leave you behind // No more under the quilt to keep you warm // Your sister I was born // You must lose me like an arrow shot into the killer storm) It doesn't help that 13-year-old!Bush could easily voice a Fleisher cartoon!Raggedy Ann. My brain is messing with me and I should be shot.
