Jun. 6th, 2005 10:57 amI'd like to address a growing problem I've been seeing recently:
"OMG _____ sucks!1"
"Why?"
"The fans do."
Um, excuse me.
Fanbase =/= The character/game/whatever itself. *GASP*
Newsflash! There's rabid fans for everything. They crawl under your bed, they drool on the sheets, they wake the neighbors with their annoyingsqueeing screeching on the fence. But honestly. If a character or game were annoying because of their fangirls, that means they must be like the fangirls themselves or whatever warped version the brats perceive them to be. Therefore, every fucking character, be it Cloud or Sephiroth or Riku, they would've all been the same boring chauvenistic Gary-Stu succumbing to the fangirl's twu wuv or whatever.
Same goes for games and whatever else. Gee, FFX must really suck, it's probably not an intelligent interesting game at all due to the humorless crackfic on FF.net and the fangirls wanting to get in Auron's pants! *rolls eyes* Think. How would you feel if I met with some rabid Harry Potter or LotR fanatics and decided, "Huh! That has to be the scariest crowd of people I've ever met, I don't like Harry Potter or LotR anymore! And that girl constantly talks about marrying Orlando Bloom, I don't like Legolas anymore either."
I'm not saying that fangirls are never a problem, nor am I saying you have to suck it up and think of "Inu-Yasha" without hearing a buncha squeaky voices in your head. I'll be honest, popularity's turned me off from several things, such as DBZ and the show mentioned last sentence. Seperating the fandom, "Inu-Yasha"'s an okay show. I like it, but I'm not willing to catch up with it anytime soon--it doesn't appeal to me in the same way as say, "Escaflowne" or "Wolf's Rain" does. Inu-Yasha himself's okay--but to reach a Geno or Shadow level, he'd have to go really high. Dog demons are fine and all, but does it compare to a possessed doll and a hedgehog that nearly kaplodes the world? Not in my universe. :) As for DBZ, my interest kinda died for it, and I'll be blunt: the fight scenes bore the hell out of me. It may be one of my first Animes, but that honor goes to one show, the one that started it all: and that, my friends, is "Sailor Moon". ;D *nod* I still like Mirai*Trunks though, and the Cell Saga is interesting with the androids (I'm talking 16, 17, and 18) and time-travel. XD I'll put up with it, but it definitely wouldn't be a show I'd watch, even when bored. XD
I don't mind if you don't like something for a valid reason: for example, I don't like Draco Malfoy from the HP series because I find him an annoying, snobby brat and a bully--it's a humongous turn-off for me, and the movies didn't change that. Yes, Tom Felton's pretty. Note: Tom Felton. Tom Felton =/= Draco Malfoy. Regardless what Draco looks like, beauty is only skin-deep. (And for a character you like, a bonus. *brick*) That, I decided before I knew Fanon*Draco existed, with his wangst and whatnot. So you long as the main reason you don't like something isn't because of a slobbering fanbase, you're okay in my book. Then you're free to complain about the fangirls. XDD
I like a lot of things that get ravaged by a horrible fanbase. "Fushigi Yuugi", anyone in Suzaku 7, "Fruits Basket", Evanescence, "Pokémon", Luigi Mario, (Thankfully, it's been dying down thanks to MaL:SS. :) ) "Pirates of the Caribbean", Jack Sparrow, Legolas, Linkin Park, Sonadow, etc. And hell, where would I be without these guys? :D (Actually, I can survive without Legolas. And a few other things) Now, if you excuse me, I'm going to spazz to Winamp.
And as Shadow fangirl, I'd like to tell you kinda guys to think, if just a little bit. No, I'm not saying you have to kiss my feet, I'm not saying you have to be like me. I'm saying there's more to dislike than throwing a hissy fit over cotton-candy-brained 13-year-olds writing their Mary-Sues, blind worship, and whatever creepy commotion or stuff they make this week. And to the rest of the Scary Ebil Fanbase TM out there: "Stop being on my side. You make me look stupid."
Excuse me if I seem like an elitist or hypocrite, or Shameless Ebil Fangirl.
