The best character by far is Rachel, 'cause at least she's assertive enough to call out Emerson on his bullshit. I get the feeling I'm not supposed to like her though, considering the narrative has called her "annoying" several times. And she's blonde, and in Twilight-knockoffs, Blondes Are Evil Shallow Bitches TM.
Paul, aka the Jacob of the tale, plays a much larger role this time around. He creepily gives Julia the nickname of "Rabbit" and he butchers the Velveteen Rabbit by ruining my favorite quote from the book; he hopes that Julia will open up and become "Real." That's right... the major theme of Velveteen Rabbithas been compared to the Shy-Bookworm-Gets-A-Makeover trope.
