Yuletide Recommendations 2012

Here's my favorite fics from Yuletide this year! :3

Fandoms: 50 Shades of Grey, Candle Cove, Classics by a 6-Year-Old, Earthbound, Ib (Video Game), Into the Woods, The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, Matilda, Puella Magi Madoka Magica, Rise of the Guardians, Twisted Princess (Disney Fanart)

Three Shades of Steele (50 Shades of Grey) (Rated T)
Summary: A jinn transforms Ana Steele's subconscious and inner goddess into living people. Permanently. That's the good news.

Let's do what E.L. James was never capable of... making Ana, her inner goddess (Kitti), and subconscious (Liz) into likable developed characters. On top of Ana finally being allowed to stand up for herself and make her own decisions, the twist on Christian Grey is brilliant. Oh yeah, and bonus Kate/Ana at the end. :)

Subject: Tiffany? (Candle Cove) (Rated M)
Summary: Hey, Maria. I know you hate talking on the phone. And hi, Pam. I don’t think I have your new number? It’s been years, so you must have changed it. I just got off the phone with Lori. I don’t know what to say. This is awful!

You know what's fun? Fics written in email format. You know what's also fun? The ending. Sweet dreams, kids.

Between 'Outerscope' and the Sleestaks (Candle Cove) (Rated T)
Summary: You have to admit, some of those special effects were so scary-looking that you can understand why adults describe a great fondness for the shows of their childhood mixed with an overwhelming feeling of terror. In between discussions of the creepy puppets from "Outerscope" and the Sleestaks, "Candle Cove" comes up again and again.

If you have to read one Candle Cove story this year, pick this one. I love the way the author weaved in urban legends and real life serial killers with Candle Cove while keeping true to the ambiguity and uncertainty of the original creepypasta. Nice and spooky. :)

On the Good Ship Laughingstock (Candle Cove) (Rated M)
Summary: They tried to piece together the memories from the show that didn't exist. Then Janice started posting.

I loved the informal writing style of this! Somehow it just makes the terror hit even closer to home.

The Tree That Moved Around and the Dreams That Stood Still (Classics by a 6-Year-Old) (Rated G)
Summary: If this story had a cover, it would probably feature a forest, fireworks, a lake with swan-boats, and a hula hoop.

Hear that squeak? That's the sound of my inner literature geek. This is the beauty of storytelling. ;; I loved the little cameo with Clover and Benjamin from Animal Farm, that was a nice touch.

Fatherless Sons (Earthbound) (Rated G)
Summary: On a sleepless night in Fourside, Ness and Poo realize they have more in common than they think.

There can never be enough fics about Poo, especially ones where he interacts with Ness. But the highlight of this fic for me is the relationship between Poo and his parents. I love the headcanon that the author has made up for them and Poo, and I might just want to adopt it. :o

All the Rowboats (Ib) (Rated T)
Summary: Ib is happy. She has a good life and a wonderful family. Now if only she could understand why this strange shadow of a man keeps following her around...

This feels just like something that could have taken place after the "Together Forever" ending of the game. Mary and Ib's personalities and the tone of the game were captured perfectly, and by the ending, I couldn't help but feel sorry for our three main characters. Gloriously creepy and poignant.

Beyond Ever After (Into the Woods) (Rated G)
Summary: It may not have been the happily ever they once imagined, but that didn't mean they couldn't try.

It only seems fitting that this "epilogue" for Into the Woods reads like a fairy-tale. I love how the Baker, Cinderella, Red and Jack could still rebuild their lives and become happy even if nobody got the "happily-ever-after" they expected, which fits with the themes of the musical itself.

The Last Night (Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask) (Rated T) (Anju/Kafei)
Summary: Three ways Anju chose to spend her last night alive.

Oh my god. This hurts in all the right ways. ;; And the hopeful ending at the end, fhjdskgkjdsghkdjsgk.

Hopes and Fears and Fidgets (Matilda) (Rated G)
Summary: Four things Matilda wanted to be when she grew up, and one thing she became.

Matilda being influenced by the adults and friends she meets in her life. Her final occupation is something we can all agree upon and smile. :)

Perdendosi (Puella Magi Madoka Magica) (Rated T) (One-sided Sayaka/Kyousuke, one-sided Sayaka/Mami, one-sided Sayaka/Kyouko)
Summary: Or: Three people Sayaka loved and one she never managed to.

Being meguca is suffering, but being Sayaka is something a lot of us can relate to. Don't be surprised if your reaction after reading is "ouch."

To Make Something From Nothing (Puella Magi Madoka Magica) (Rated T) (Kyouko/Sayaka)
Summary: After it all, there's more to be found. All you need to do is make something happen.

I bet you're feeling gloomy after reading Perdendosi, so here's a happy ending. As this fic shows Kyouko, idealism has its place in the world after all. :)

gaudium in veritate (Puella Magi Madoka Magica) (Rated T)
Summary: "Since this country calls women who are still growing up girls, then for girls who are on the way to becoming witches, it's logical to call them magical girls." What are Witches really made of? Who are they? Five vignettes that try to answer these questions.

Yay for witches! Five character studies about the witch forms of our main cast, short and sweet and sad. My favorites are Homulilly's and Kriemhild Gretchen's. :)

The Center Cannot Hold… But It Can Change (Rise of the Guardians) (Rated T) (Jack Frost/Pitch Black)
Summary: Jack was the one to eventually break the silence. He said softly, "I see it. What you're saying. My center… it's the same. We both laughed just now, right? But did you laugh because the children were having fun playing in the water… or because it was funny as hell when the girl pushed the boy in?"

Wow. It feels like I've been immersed back into canon, the fic captures it so well. I don't exactly consider myself a Jack/Pitch shipper, but this fic makes it believable enough that I might change my mind. :o

Seven for a Secret (Twisted Princess) (Rated T)
Summary: Seven Happily Ever Afters that weren't. Welcome to the Wonderful World of Disney.

When I think of Twisted Princess, this is the sort of horror I'm looking for. All the vignettes are creative and original, whether it mixes legends or history depending on the time period the princesses came from. My favorite is Jasmine's, followed by Aurora's. :)

Once Upon a Dream (Twisted Princess) (Rated T)
Summary: Belle hears a story about two sleeping princesses.

I like the idea of a young Belle being told and fascinated by a dark fairy-tale, and I love how the worlds of Sleeping Beauty and Snow White meshed together seamlessly like a single canon. Fun and creative and worth a look.
sarajayechan: Eirika looking determined, preparing to strike an enemy (Lady+Peebles)

I thought you might get a kick out of that 50 Shades fic. <3 Seriously, if the trilogy had been all about that I'd have actually loved it.
