Challenging Fanfic Meme ganked from [livejournal.com profile] lark!

If you had to delete all but five of your stories, which five would you keep and why? (Or ten if you're more prolific.)

Let's go with five to make my life easier. Mainly 'cause A. Most of the stuff I post on my creative LJ are ficlets and drabbles. B. My fics are old and crappy. XD But I'll do my best. In no order...

1. Homeward (Yume Nikki) I always wanted to write an adaptation of the trip to Mars "dream-within-a-dream-within-a-dream" (in before INCEPTION jokes) from Yume Nikki and explore what Madotsuki and Masada's relationship must've been like, and I got the opportunity to do so. ;; The fic was emotionally draining since it's one of those rare fics where I applied raw personal experience, making it wrenching and painful for me to write. But in the end, it was worth it, and I'm proud of how it turned out. ;;

2. Protagonist (Eversion) Ugh, I hate the title of this fic. XD Another Pragmatic Adaptation of an indie/horror video game, and this time, it's Eversion! I feel like I snapped my fingers and caught the deceptive spirit of the game. Considering adaptations, that's a tricky thing to do. So I'm giddy. :)

3. To Be Real (Super Mario RPG) Okay, this fic is old. I wrote it when I was 15. :o But I consider this to be my first "serious" work, the first time I put my awe and creativity into a magnum opus. I was proud of the fic back then, and considered this to be an evolutionary stepping stone as I continued to write and made works even better than this one. So however old and flawed this is now, I still hold my Genofic close to my heart as a testament to what I'd become. And it's the first fic of mine to have fanart drawn for it by a random fan, which gives me an ego boost indeed. 8)

4. For All That Tomorrow Might Bring (WALL-E) Complete with spazzing in the description and crappy art! XD An adaptation of the--I think we're seeing a pattern here. :o Incredibly short, but it's me stepping out of the box for once and writing for a wildly different fandom. I thought of writing a couple more WALL-E drabbles (namely AUTO adjusting to Earth life and being forgiven by WALL-E) but I never got around to them. Let's just say that a movie is something if it affected me enough to write/draw for it as soon as I left theaters. :o

5. Hanging Onto Nothing (9) I'm not even in this fandom anymore (and 1's not even my favorite character) but something about this fic gets me somehow. It's more bitter than what I usually write (then again, 1 is a bitter character. :P) and whereas I usually struggle with structure, this is the most structured, straight-forward thing I've done. My secret? It's a secret songfic to "Pretty Good Year" by Tori Amos. Listen to the lyrics and the instrumental/mood changes in the song and compare it to the passages of the fic. Even the fic's title is based off a lyric: They say you were something in those formative years // Hold onto nothing as fast as you can...

While technically it doesn't count as "fanfic," I'm proud of the Mewtwo creepypasta I wrote. I wanted to make something creative and genuinely creepy without resorting to blood and gore and Lavender Town cliches, and something that would seem plausible for a haunted cartridge to have. I'd actually be interested if someone did fanart or made a hacked version of my pasta. <.<;;;

The Sonadow stories didn't make it 'cause I associate them bad memories of when I was a stupid and paranoid fangirl who descended from having fun writing Sonicfic to freaking out about what fandom thought of her as a Sonadow shipper. :( I'd like to move on from that, plz thnx.

What disappointed you the most about your last story?

You mean READY! FOR CUPCAKES! (My Little Pony: Cupcakes/Eversion/Raggedy Ann & Andy: A Musical Adventure) Ugggh. XD Well, I obviously wrote it for myself without the intentions of making it a masterpiece, but still. I didn't think I did a good job of writing Pinkie, even as her Cupcakes!Self. I also wanted to portray Rarity as sympathetic, having been temporarily being kept hostage, and to her horror forced to sew cutie-mark "outfits" against her will. Which wasn't clear in Pinkie's dialogue at all. That, and you could see where I tried to reference Amnesia: The Dark Descent (or should I say Amnesia: The Pink Descent?) and it had an awkward delivery and it just didn't work at all. Clearly I just put it there 'cause hey, meme opportunity. And that's what the fic was really. A goddamn meme. X(

Not to mention I'm disturbed how much fun I had writing the Greedy. *buries face in her hands*

Pick a passage you're especially proud of. Ideally it'd be one of the best passages you think you've ever written.

From "Homeward" (Yume Nikki):

This planet wasn't theirs after all.

She went down the spout herself. Someone else lived here, underground and isolated in a machine-powered dome not unlike the technology she remembered from her old planet. He was lonely and crying, and neither rejected or embraced her presence. It was all the same to him. He lived in a perpetual state of grief, as a native of a planet he destroyed with his own hand. He spoke of its past beauty in song, a song that meant everything to him and nothing to everyone else. The little girl comprehended the beauty and thought she could recognize it, but she had been too late to grasp the full meaning of it. The song left her in tears.

The land they found themselves in was ruined.

A ruined man. A ruined girl.
A ruined creature.
A ruined home.

The little girl found it hopeless. She vowed to leave the ship and never come back. He tried calling her back, but to no avail. Once again, he was stranded and lonely in space.

He never played the piano again.

Now tear it apart.

OH BOY. Can do, Mr. Meme! Self-deprecation is my specialty! ;D

First of all, my grammar sucks. Pronoun confusion! Who the hell is "he" at the last five sentences? Is it Mr. Mars? Masada? How do you know "the creature" is male in the first place?

I'm not sure if I hit the nail on the head on what made me sad when I visited Mr. Mars in Yume Nikki. The more I think about it, I'm agonizing over a detail I completely forgot that I thought was poignant. In-game, if you have the Knife effect, you can stab objects and NPCs. Usually the latter screams with a small spurt of blood and disappears. But with Mr. Mars? His tears change a different color and the stabmarks stay on his body. Doubling with the background music and his song when you talk to him, I thought it was incredibly poignant. It seemed like he was a metaphor for catharsis; something for Madotsuki to put all her grief and rage into, while Mr. Mars wouldn't change and keep crying, making you feel helpless... Now I'm hitting myself over not including this detail in my fic. Why didn't I include it? WRYYYYYYYYYY. T_______T I could've made this a trillion times more heart-wrenching than just "Mr. Mars, and in turn, Madotsuki and Masada, mourn for what is lost." ...Though that's good too. But not pushed enough past my comfort zone to become amazing.

What's a favorite story by someone else? How would you describe the style, narrative technique, etc (whatever you want to say about it)?

Damn, this is tough. I don't really read fic as much as I used to anymore (and much rarer, longfic), unless it's by friends or it's on a kink meme or something. I get my inspiration from books like the classics. :P Um...

I don't go out of my way to read Shakespeare fic, but there's this incredible Benvolio/Mercutio fic that I'm kind of a chickenwuss to talk about, but I'll try. It's a 28-chaptered fic called Caro by [livejournal.com profile] pargoletta that I've adopted as my new canon for Romeo & Juliet. Yeah. It's that good.

First off, the way the author is able to be true to the Shakespearian language while flowing it in a way that can be easily understood by the modern reader. Second, the sheer amount of historical research done for this fic makes my jaw drop. The time period comes alive in the best ways historical fiction can do. (It's through this fic that I first heard about Plato's Symposium. :o) Third, the character development. Holy fuck, the character development. Even the most minor NPCs have an interesting impact on the story, and I find myself drawn to certain characters such as Valentine.

Then there's Mercutio and Benvolio. The author takes her time to let the relationship develop (not until halfway does Benvolio admit his feelings for him), and I just feel for those two. Especially Mercutio. Oh my god, Mercutio. He is wrenching in this. I won't spoil anything else, except I was crossing my fingers and rooting for the happiness of those two men every step of the way.

Just be warned Caro sometimes deals with delicate subject matter, such as child abuse, and it's handled to the point that it hurts.

tl;dr: It's a fanfic outside my comfort zone that led me to discover fascinating new things and IT PLAYS WITH MY EMOTIONS IN ALL THE RIGHT WAYS.

I still haven't found a way to compliment the author yet. I actually found her fic when she left advice at an LJ post I made regarding help for my novel, so it's more like trying to figure out a way to thank her for the inspiration and the impact her story had on me and how much it moved me. SOMEDAAAAAAAAY.

Damn. This reads more like a spazzing ficrec than a critical analysis of someone's style. I fail at getting technical about other people's fics. :(

If you could choose to emulate one fic writer, who would it be and why?

Dal/[livejournal.com profile] slaygirl. Her writing has a raw honesty and she isn't afraid to write what others in fandom overlook because it makes them uncomfortable. The way she depicts characters--usually villains--as complex and three-dimensional, showing their flaws as well as their strengths. She doesn't have a narrow-minded vision of "good" and "evil", and emphasizes without being sympathetic. She puts nobody on a pedestal or beneath dirt, showing who she writes about as what they are... human beings.

How do you feel when or after reading something really good? Be honest.

It depends. Either it's "Wow, that's amazing! I want to be able to do something like that! :o" or "Holy fuck, that is incredible. There's no way I'll be able to write like that, and it makes me feel inferior. D:" or both. Usually both. It's... complicated. ^^;;;

What are five of your favorite words?

Damn, I'll have to think about this one. Um... I like verbs. Delicious, delicious verbs. The more punch and less generic, the better. Hell, I think I found one of my favorite words here:

- Delicious. I seem to use this one a lot, including my regular LJ posts. Hell, say it out loud. DEEEEE-LISH-iss. It's so much fun! I love the way my tongue rolls when I say it, (along with making a hard "dee" and a "shhh" sound) and it's versatile too! Kinda overused when it comes to eating food, but when it's something a villain says ("The way you squirm is so delicious") or a character being aroused by someone else's action ("His intent gaze at his partner while he trailed his fingers on the other man's thighs was delicious.")... oh bby. Works for comic effect too, like Rotom wanting hunt tasty Shaymins.
- Trace/Trail/Touch/Trust/Taste/Twitch/Twist/etc. Holy string, Batman! I seem to be a sucker for hard "tee" sounds. It's strong and subtle (see above sentence. XD), and a well-placed "Touch me" sends me goosebumps. Touch me... trust me... savor each sensation...
- Bloom. I find it such a pretty word, particularly when used as a noun. I automatically associate it with flowers and beauty and it makes me giddy.
- Cock/Erection. I JUST FIND COCK TO BE A VERY SEXY WORD. It's the hard "k" sound that does it for me. Alas, "cock" doesn't always work for every ship I write for, since it risks being jarring, so I actually don't get to use it that often. ...*gets it out and giggles* I feel so immature. When I do, it's sparingly, or else I'd end up with just this wide grin on my face and I don't know why. When all else fails, I tend to use "erection" to describe a guy's parts, since it's nice and neutral. And it's got that hard "k" and "shh" sound I like.
- Snap. O SNAP. It's just a fun word to say. It's like I mentally hear a snapping noise whenever I read that word too. I love it. "That person snapped at me." "Uh oh, she snapped." Like a firecracker~ ♥

...I'm kind of ashamed how dirty this list sounds. *sob* I'm also probably one of the few people who likes the word "moist." What's wrong with me?

Bonus: refrain from using any of those words in the next story you write.

O SNAP FUCK. Now my next smutfic is doomed. XD

Edit: I completely forgot the word, "grit", like "he grit his teeth." It shows a lot of character and it makes for a great verb/noun. :o And I like the way it's spelled and said. /shuts up before she edits this post like crazy.
