Fanfiction Memes!
God, the worst fucking dreams are where you know you're dreaming and you're doing everything in your fucking power to wake up, but nothing works. Your eyes are way too fucking heavy and you're still stuck in the dream even when the waking world is right in your grasp.
So now that I'm finally awake, let's distract ourselves from worldly horrors with writing memes. I've been much more active than I have in previous years, boy oh boy~ Not counting my Yuletide fic because that's gotta stay anon until reveals.
First, from
javert:
Rules: go through your last 5 fics and share the first and last line. No context.
1. To warm the cold side of the pillow
First: “Check this out, Brad!” Terry beamed, slamming a stack of magazines on the table.
Last: Once Terry was out the door, he lay back in bed, basking in the unfamiliar but welcomed afterglow.
2. Of Otters and Bears
First: “Queen Roger once called you an otter,” said Brad to Terry. “What did he mean by that?”
Last: As Brad settled him beneath the crook of his arm stub, he could almost believe it.
3. Baneful Bunker
First: Nobody’s scared of trucks.
Last: It wasn’t long before Terry and Olan followed him into Dreamland themselves.
4. Word Vomit
First: “Now let’s go see your sister.”
Last: Not anymore.
5. Sad Satan (Chapter 4: Marketland)
First: “What the hell is this thing?” Susie asked, examining the red binoculars. “Is this supposed to be a kaleidoscope or what?”
Last: What Kris saw next in the binoculars was a set of bloody teeth.
And this one's from
rionaleonhart:
Number of fics written in 2023: Including chapter updates to longfic? Seven fics. Six if we exclude Yuletide. It's a whopping large number compared to recent years, since I've been in a massive writing slump. Recently it's like "Good god I have these ideas and I can't keep them to myself anymore," which is goddamn refreshing.
Fandoms: LISA: The Painful RPG, Deltarune, Undertale, and (REDACTED)
Best title: Baneful Bunker (LISA). It's just a really cool Pokémon move that also happens to make for a really cool title.
Worst title: Marketland, Chapter 4 of Sad Satan. (Deltarune) Nothing too exciting, but it gets the point across. I might've overdone it with To warm the cold side of the pillow (its working title was Busy Bee Terry but it felt dishonest when Terry only sleeps with one person in the fic) but I wanted an excuse to use lyrics from alt-J's "Hunger of the Pine" for a title, so that's why. ;;
Best first line: Nobody’s scared of trucks. --Baneful Bunker
Worst first line: “Now let’s go see your sister.” --Word Vomit (LISA) It's copy-pasted dialogue straight from the game, so it doesn't really count as mine.
Best last line: Mad Dog snored with his eyes open. It wasn’t long before Terry and Olan followed him into Dreamland themselves. --Baneful Bunker. I just like the mental image of Mad Dog sleeping with his eyes open, lol
Worst last line: What Kris saw next in the binoculars was a set of bloody teeth. --Marketland, Chapter 4 of Sad Satan. I wanted to go fast-paced so the prose would seem panicky and show how scary the current antagonist was, but I think it sounds rushed in a "thank god this chapter is almost over" way. Godammit. :(
Looking back, did you write more than you thought you would this year, less than you thought, or about what you predicted?
More for sure! Knocking on wood, but I credit LISA for helping me out of a slump. ;;
What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted last year?
Goddamn LISA. I'm writing a slavefic (though it's more like a hostage situation where the hostage doesn't expect to be saved, and the hostage is having sex with their captor in exchange for the safety of a loved one and his crew) as we speak, and it's actually the first part of a massive fix-it fic for the game. I also tackled parent/child incest (and forced brother/sister incest), rape by proxy, and brief descriptions of rape fantasies and someone's memories of being gangraped, so ow ow ow. That's a lot outside my comfort zone.
Regarding pairings... hm. I guess it was kinda inevitable I'd get into BradTerry, but fandom really got me into OlanTerry too, and after writing Baneful Bunker where Olan and Terry are friends, I want to do shippy fic of them too. ;;
What’s your favourite story this year? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you the happiest.
I'm so proud of how To warm the cold side of the pillow (LISA, Brad/Terry) turned out! ;; I've been sharing it around like crazy, and I'm happy to have finally finished my first BradTerry smut where I can really explore my feelings about them. ;; And believe me, I plan on writing a hell lot more BradTerry. I'm not gonna shut up about them for a looooooooong time. :P
Okay, NOW your most popular story.
I'm blown away at the number of comments and kudos Word Vomit got, especially for being a ventfic. I even made my first LISA friend because of this fic. ;;
Story most underappreciated by the universe?
None I can really think of? To warm the cold side of the pillow was just recently posted and it's been inching its way up. It got past 10+ kudos, boy oh boy oh boy~ ♥ ♥ ♥
Story that could have been better?
My Yuletide fic. :( It's okay and I don't hate it (I wouldn't gift it otherwise!) but I feel like I could've pushed further. I could be overthinking though, I just hope my recipient enjoys it. :o
Sexiest story?
To warm the cold side of the pillow. I call it the hotdogging fic for a reason. ;D
Saddest story?
Word Vomit, no goddamn contest. :(
Most fun?
Baneful Bunker 'cause writing some of Brad's party members (namely Rage Ironhead) being mean and insulting to Terry was ridiculously fun to write. After writing cinnamon rolls (Terry), gray morality characters (Brad), and abusive monsters (Marty), it's actually refreshing to write people who are just assholes, lol. XD
Story with single sweetest moment?
Of Otters and Bears (LISA, BradTerry) was written for this exact reason. Just Terry promising to hold Brad's arm (well, what's left of it) like an otter so his favorite Papa Bear will never drift off to sea. ♥
Most fucked-up story?
Word Vomit for everything I described earlier. Brad and Lisa have so much trauma, and gaaaaaah, those poor kids, they deserve so much better. ;; And I'm not even done torturing Terry, RIP.
Hardest story to write?
Marketland, Chapter 4 of Sad Satan. It was like pulling teeth writing that chapter and I do not know why. :(
Easiest/most fun story to write?
I already explained why Baneful Bunker was the funnest to write, so let's answer the first part of the question. I was under a LOT of IRL stress when I wrote Word Vomit, and on top of some dark LISA brainworms that were haunting me, I felt like I had to get my thoughts across somehow. On a lighter note, Of Otters and Bears was me being desperate for more BradTerry and wanting to see something cute and fluffy for them, haha. XD
Did any stories shift your perception of the characters?
(insert long dark laughter here)
Every time I write Brad, I just feel even worse for him and I want to give him the biggest hug and all the therapy in the world. ;; Writing Buddy is tricky because you have to balance between not writing the Precocious Child trope while also remembering she grew up in fucking Olathe, but I can see where she's coming from and sometimes end up projecting through her, RIP. Also Olan is amazing even though he's still a wreck himself. ;; And go figure, I just love Terry more and more the more I write him.
Most overdue story?
Marketland, Chapter 4 of Sad Satan. and Chapter 19: I Believe from The Scars We Choose (Undertale, Chara/Asriel) Biggest apologies to all the Sad Satan and TSWC fans. ;; My co-writer and BFF EndlessCharade has been going through a lot of hell this year, and I realized my major block in Sad Satan comes from me wanting to know what happens in Deltarune Chapter 3 and who the hell Mike and Tenna are. So Sad Satan is gonna be on hold for a while. ;;
Did you take any writing risks this year? What did you learn from them?
So. Goddamn. Much. I thought Sad Satan was me trying to push past my limits and tackle some of the darkest subject matter that's been brewing in my head, but LISA is daring me to go beyond that. It's like LISA is simultaneously the game that ruined my life and gave it back to me, lol. It's telling me not to worry about being "too edgy"/"too cringe" and just write all the scary shit that's been haunting me, because the world is a scary place and you're not a bad person for wanting to explore dead dove/taboo subjects. I've also been taught that goddamn it, it's fucking okay to indulge in characters healing and being happy after suffering from the worst tragedies, even when they're from canons where their downfall is inevitable.
On a lighter note, LISA gave me a lot more confidence in writing extremely masculine/hairy/not conventionally attractive men in gay smut, and goddamn it, Brad Armstrong is GNC and deserves the sexiest dress, comfiest panties, and Buddy decorating his face in as much makeup as possible. And he can be sub to Terry as a treat. Eat dirt, dudebros!
