I'm just going to leave my response riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight here.

Meanwhile, I learned something new today; If an author can write "Twilight" fanfiction, swap out the names and become published (Ex. 50 Shades of Gray, which has a friggin' movie deal), my writing has a chance of making it out there too.

J.K. Rowling's response reminds me of one of the very first fanfic I ever read, which introduced me to porn and slash all in the same sort of horribly disorienting/confusing moment. orz. IT WAS A LEARNING EXPERIENCE, let's say. So it's okay J.K. Rowling, those who will stumble across Harry/Draco porn are probably old enough to handle it, and if they're not old enough to handle it, what are their parents even doing allowing them to wander around the big bad Internet all by themselves :(?

My first time reading porn on the Internet was... hoo boy. XDDD;;; Knowing Harry Potter fandom, chances are it's already WAY too late for many 12-year-olds. :P

Gabaldon's full response to fanfiction is a whole lot worse than the post lets on, as the commentors pointed out; she compared fanfiction to "selling children into white slavery." Nope, not just any slavery, but *gasp* white slavery! Gory details at 5.

And some of those authors wrote fanfiction themselves! Anne Rice did the "Sleeping Beauty" trilogy and several books about Jesus (1st-person through his POV too!), and Orson Scott Card did a homophobic version of "Hamlet." They've got room to talk, but hey, totally doesn't count!

Gabaldon also bitched about fanfiction being nothing but porn, when not only are her books packed with erotica, there were graphic rape scenes. It's okay when she does it, but not her fanbase!

Blergh, that article. :/ (On the other hand, though, knowing that the author of The Outsiders writes fanfic kind of made my week.)

Aw man, when I read that about S.E. Hinton, I smiled. :) Neil Gaiman writes fanfic too, and he's quite praised for it.
