Day 4: A game that makes you sad

Mother 3

Many years later, after a petition and a cancelled game for the N64, Mother 3 finally came out on the GBA. It'd be the last game of the Mother series in general... if not the last, then the last one to be made and directed by Shigesato Itoi, the series creator. Depressing doesn't begin to cover this game. Hell, the N64 version was gonna be a lot worse.

The game begins with a family living in a peaceful village called Tazmily: Flint, Hinawa, twins Lucas & Claus, and their dog Boney. Friendly dinosaurs, good townspeople, the whole lot. Everything changes with the arrival of the Pig Masks, an army built by Pokey (Porky in this game) from the last game. You know the first thing that happens in this game? I don't consider it a spoiler since it happens near the beginning of Chapter 1, but if you want to fling pitchforks at me, it's your call. Hinawa dies. That's right. In true Bambi's mom/Littlefoot's mom fashion, your mother gets killed protecting you by taking a tooth to the heart from a mechanized Drago. It gets worse from here. The last place I stopped was where a corrupt guy called Yokuba/Fassad was shocking a monkey to force him to set up Happy Boxes (aka TVs) in Tazmily and teaching the townsfolk all about money and greed. For some reason, it makes me more uncomfortable than any "Technology is baaaaaaaaaaaad!!11!" thing I've ever read.

Wait a minute. This is a Mother game?

I'm aware that the song the series was inspired from (John Lennon - Mother) makes you feel you've been punched in the gut, but still. I'm used to being cheered up whenever I play a Mother game, and Mother 3 did start like that too. Not saying there shouldn't be drama and horror and angst (hell, at this point in the Pokemon series, I welcome it. :P) but with Mother 3, I feel like it gets to be too much and it's rather jarring. D: Mother 1 balanced the creepy/funny/sadness and Mother 2 pulled some "gotcha!" moments with surprise nightmare fuel, but I feel so horrible for Lucas and Duster and gang that it makes it difficult for me to play. It doesn't help that a lot of the sad scenes in the game involve family: Lucas feels guilty for his mother's death, Wes(s) is constantly belittling Duster (and in Tanetane Island, Wess reveals, "It's my fault that you limp.") and starting the next time I play the game, Flint is in the mountains searching for his missing son, Claus, while forgetting Lucas is at home. Due to my own family, something about familial tragedy triggers me, making it another reason why it's taking me forever to finish this game. I get Tanetane Island and the ending to look forward too. Oh geez.

Not saying this game is bad by any means, hell no! It's worth playing as much as the other games and I love Lucas/Claus/Duster/Kumatora/etc. to pieces. Which makes it hurt as I wait for them to become stronger is I'm worried that every time they're ready to confront their demons, they're kicked back to the ground and spat on, like their efforts were for nothing. This fear and utter hopelessness keeps tugging me and ugh. D: I just don't think I can play a game like that, which is why I tend to avoid sad novels and movies like the plague. I always feel bad too, since Mother 3 is usually the favorite of everyone who plays the Mother series. Don't mind me. I'm just overwhelmed and thinking about everything too much, and it's probably my punishment for spoiling every major thing that happens in this game, especially if the sad parts were supposed to be surprises in the first place.

I'll beat this game. One day. No Crying Until the Ending and all that. Won't stop me from sadfacing constantly though. DDDD:

Runner's Up: Glorious darkness and drama in Pokemon: Mystery Dungeon, especially Explorers of Sky! (This game tells you to commit suicide. Silly rabbit, Pokemon is for kids!) The ending and the Mr. Mars scene in Yume Nikki. Did I mention Majora's Mask?
