TV Tropes...

"Don't Leave Home" by Dido is supposed to be about addiction, and even without that Word Of God, lines like "You won't need other friends anymore" and "I arrived when you were weak / I'll make you weaker like a child" ought to be a tip-off. Dido has said that people have told her they played it at their weddings and that she finds this fact a little disturbing.

Fuck. I've always listened to the whole song and interpreted those lines much differently, and thought it was an adorable fluffy song that cheered me up whenever I listened to it. WELP nice to know I was completely wrong. That song is ruined for me now.

Meanwhile, is anyone else sick and tired of people using "White Flag" as the fandom anthem for OTP/shipping? Especially when the song itself is about someone wanting to stay with their ex even though the relationship is clearly falling apart. Not exactly stable grounds for supporting your OTP with.

People play inappropriate songs at weddings all the TIME.

Besides, love IS an addiction, it's just one that society approves of. You know, kind of like smoking. If nothing else, the fact that fandom shipping exists should support my case.

(Don't worry about what other people say; I still get cheered up by Every Breath You Take even though it's stalker levels of creepy. Enjoy the song for the reasons YOU enjoy it. Music is not just for the artist, no matter what hipsters may say.)

It is really fun to screech "I WILL GO DOWN WITH THIS SHIP," though! I think that's why people use it, and pretty much ignore the rest of the song. (The chorus totally makes sense for the bitter drawn-out battling that is ship wars, though.)

And yeah, I can see how Don't Leave Home can has positive connotations--take the song as you want to!

Ha! I'd been listening to Gorillaz, so when you mentioned White Flag I thought you were talking about this song. XD If we're talking the Dido version, (which makes considerably more sense) I agree it's a rather odd anthem for shipping, though the chorus does fit very well.
