Eel and Meyer didn't invent romanticizing abusive relationships, that's for sure. What I think people should be talking about is how they fell into encouraging such toxic mindsets in the first place. Society has gotten so entrenched in misogyny and rape culture that it's gotten to the point where women like Eel and Meyer and all their copycats perpetuate what they've been taught and see nothing wrong with it. (ex. Jamie McGuire threw a big fit on Goodreads when a reviewer pointed out the disturbing behavior of Travis from Beautiful Disaster; not only couldn't she believe he was abusive, she insisted he wasn't and attacked anyone who said otherwise. Then there's After by Anna Todd, which warped a real life person that One Direction fans refer to as a "teddy bear" into a nasty bully) We can criticize them, certainly, but we also need to take a long hard look at the culture that made them think and act that way in the first place.
