shamanicshaymin: Pit bull hiding in the leaves. :3 (Charasans :: Back Off Kid)
So, I think I have enough songs for a fanmix (we called 'em "FSTs" in the ol' days of Livejournal) so I'm checking out how 8tracks works to see if I can get one ready. Which leads me to a rant about something that annoys me about 8tracks.

The biggest problem I have with 8tracks is I can't see the tracklist. I have to listen to the entire fanmix first, and I'm only allowed a certain number of skips. What if there's an artist I don't like? I wouldn't know they're there until it's too late. Sometimes I want to look at what other songs people have for Frisk, Chara, etc. So that I, a fanmixer, don't end up using the same songs everyone and their mother already uses and associates with Frisk, Chara, etc.

I don't have time to listen to entire soundtracks. JUST GIVE ME THE DAMN TRACKLIST AND I'LL DECIDE IF I WANT TO LISTEN OR NOT. This is what I really miss from the FST days on Livejournal. YOU HAD A DAMN TRACKLIST. At least some 8tracks fanmixes are advertised on tumblr posts with a tracklist included, saving me a lot of time. Still, it's extremely frustrating.

"But Puri, the whole point of 8tracks is to discover new music! You can't do that if you have immediate access to tracklists!"

DON'T TELL ME HOW I SHOULD LISTEN TO MUSIC.

Sometimes, if I see artists I like on the fanmix? I may be encouraged to listen to the others. And I haven't heard every single song by my favorite artists, especially if they've got a HUGE library like say, Tori Amos or The Beatles. So finding songs that remind me of a character or pairing by an artist I like that got buried beneath Archive Panic is a cool thing. Ex. I hadn't registered "For Good" from the Wicked musical as a Friskriel song until someone pointed it out and sang a cover for it. Even if it's a song I already have, I could agree with the fanmixer's choices and I'd want to know what else they've got. Back when [livejournal.com profile] fst was still active, I used to comb the archive for FSTs that had at least one song by an artist I liked, such as Patrick Wolf or AniDiFranco or Bjork. That's how I got into their music, from little trickles that people would include on FSTs. Didn't matter if I didn't know the fandom. I'd look up, see they have a song by Garbage or Say Anything I hadn't heard yet, and pounce on it like a cat with a new ball of yarn or a laser pointer dot.

And this way, I have something to associate the song with to remember it by, as opposed to aimlessly wandering iTunes. Ex. I have this gorgeous male cover of "I Hope You Dance" (done by Ronan Keating) I got it off of some random shippy Iruka/Sakura FST or something. I wouldn't know anything about the fandom or pairing at all, but I'd go, "Oh hey, I got that song from a random Naruto FST! :D"

Hell, I can tell you the FST I was introduced to Patrick Wolf from. It was for Ken Ichijouji from the second season of Digimon. Looking through the tracklist, I saw "Magpie" along with a few sample lyrics. I thought, "Hey, that looks pretty" and downloaded it. I was blown away. Like, from the first note.

Reaction .gifs? Oh yeah. Required. )

Where was I? Oh, right. I can't really do that anymore on 8tracks. I'm forced to go blind with the exceptions of a few artist names in the tags instead. THANKS 8TRACKS.

One of the nice things about having a new fandom is old songs you've listened and loved a million times become new again. For once, the lyrics are under the cut because I relate them to UNDERTALE SPOILERS

James, come on home
You've been gone too long, baby
We can't let our hero die alone

We miss you day and night
You left town to live by the rifle
You left us to fight
But it just ain't right to take away the light!

Remember Genie from the casino?
She's still a-waiting in that big brass bed
The boys from your gang are knocking whisky back
'Til they get out of hand and wish they were dead
They're only lonely for the life that they led with their old friend

Ooh, James, are you selling your soul to a cold gun?

Where lies your heart?
It's not there in the buckskin, baby
It's not there in the gin
That makes you laugh long and loud

You're a coward, James
You're running away from humanity
You're running out on reality
It won't be funny when they rat-a-tat-tat you down!

Will Sylvain Reynard shut the fuck up about "Closer" from Nine Inch Nails? All she ever does is quote the "fuck you like an animal" line and act like it's the single most objectifying and sinful lyric in the universe. Never mind that Trent Reznor's written other sexually-charged songs and that "Reptile" is 100x more violent, degrading, and disturbing. Never mind that he wrote "Fragile," one of my favorite NIN songs and one of the wibbliest love songs ever. On the other hand, I totally see Reynard using "Fragile" as a way for Gabriel to compare it with Julia, and yuck. I actually hope it never comes up. Reynard already thinly alluded to Trent doing backup vocals for Tori Amos' "Past The Mission," and I don't want her to shit on more of my favorite bands and songs.

Everybody in this book other than Gabriel has better chemistry with Julia. Rachel was basically professing her love to Julia before she had to go on the plane. DON'T LEAVE ME RACHEL, YOU'RE THE ONE CHARACTER I DON'T FEEL LIKE STABBING A PIKE THROUGH *sobs*

It never ever goes through Julia's brain that her big nostalgic night with Gabriel was when he was drunk off his ass. Of COURSE he doesn't remember her! Why the fuck doesn't she tell him about the night at the apple orchard? Just say, "Hey, I don't think you remember me, but one time, we kissed at an apple orchard." It's not that fucking hard. Manufactured drama/Lack of Communication Kills like this does not increase the goddamn tension in romance novels; it just makes me think the characters are fucking stupid!

IhatethisbookIhatethisbookIhatethisbook

By the way, there's still four chapters open for anyone who wants to spork the book here. :D I might consider taking another chapter on, this book is pissing me off this much.

You ever have those songs that you've listened to for years, then when you go revisit them, you think, "O SNAP IT'S SO-AND-SO'S THEME SONG"? 'Cause I got that moment when I checked out Meryl Streep's take on "Stay With Me" from Into the Woods.

The main villain of the novel I'm working on is a nutcracker named Dr. Medlock. He's kidnapped one of the main characters, Raggedy Ann, and is holding her hostage while using her candy heart for an experiment he's working on. Said experiment is him trying to bring his lost daughter back to life; a ballerina doll named Clara that he took under his care until the day she disappeared in a fire reminiscent of the one from "The Steadfast Tin Soldier." Basically, he parallels Johnny Gruelle (creator of Raggedy Ann & Andy) and his grief over losing his daughter Marcella... except Dr. Medlock is a hell of a lot more psychotic and abusive. In spite of the verbal beatings, manipulation and punishment he administers, he develops a bizarre attachment to Ann as though she were Clara herself...

What did I clearly say?
Children must listen!

What were you not to do?
Children must see and learn...

Why could you not obey?
Children should listen!
What have I been to you?
What would you have me be?
Handsome like a Prince?

Ah, but I am old
I am ugly
I embarrass you!

You are ashamed of me
You are ashamed

You don't understand...

Don't you know what's out there in the world?
Someone has to shield you from the world
Stay with me

Princes wait there in the world, it's true
Princes, yes, but wolves and humans, too
Stay at home
I am home
Who out there could love you more than I?
What out there that I cannot supply?
Stay with me

Stay with me
The world is dark and wild
Stay a child while you can be a child
With me...

I went to an animation Livestream yesterday, which showed a cute movie called "A Monster in Paris." There's two versions, the English dub and the original French, and we watched the latter with subtitles. It's got teeny bits and pieces of "Phantom of the Opera" and little homages to other films such as "La Belle et la Bête" and "King Kong" and a charming cast (for the most part. The chat booed whenever the annoying waiter showed up. XD), including the titular monster who is a giant flea and his only dialogue is in song during the film's musical numbers. He's so cute and timid and sweet! (And the chat squeed with me, of course) And his voice is gorgeous in French. Sean Lennon (John Lennon's son) plays him in the English version and he does fine from what I've heard of him, but I'm too spoiled by the original French actor, haha. XD

Here's the song he sings after we see his form for the first time.

Sorry for the Spanish subtitles, but this is the closest to high quality of the French version I can find. Anyway, the highlight of the movie is when Francoeur (aka the Adorable Flea Monster) and Lucille share a duet together:

La Seine (French version)

Watch it when you've got spare time, nomnomnom. I'm certainly glad I did. :D *adds Francoeur to the list of characters I've got to get icons of*

In Animal Crossing news, Cookie threw a party for Queen Mary today, and Marshal and Skye attended the party too. I love you, Cookie. ;; Never change. ♥

I finally finished my English paper! Now I can curl up and dread my lab exam tomorrow morning. :P

The snow glows white on the mountain tonight
Not a footprint to be seen
A kingdom of isolation
And it looks like I'm the queen

The wind is howling like this swirling storm inside
Couldn't keep it in, heaven knows I've tried

Don't let them in, don't let them see
Be the good girl you always have to be
Conceal, don't feel, don't let them know
Well, now they know

Let it go, let it go
Can't hold it back anymore
Let it go, let it go
Turn away and slam the door
I don't care what they're going to say
Let the storm rage on
The cold never bothered me anyway

It's funny how some distance makes everything seem small
And the fears that once controlled me can't get to me at all
It's time to see what I can do
To test the limits and break through
No right, no wrong, no rules for me
I'm free

Let it go, let it go
I am one with the wind and sky
Let it go, let it go
You'll never see me cry
Here I stand and here I'll stay
Let the storm rage on

My power flurries through the air into the ground
My soul is spiraling in frozen fractals all around
And one thought crystallizes like an icy blast
I'm never going back, the past is in the past

Let it go, let it go
And I'll rise like the break of dawn
Let it go, let it go
That perfect girl is gone
Here I stand in the light of day
Let the storm rage on
The cold never bothered me anyway

Love, hold my hand
Help me see with the dawn
That those that have left are not gone
But they carry on as stars looking down
As Nature's Sons and Daughters of the Heavens

You will not ever be forgotten by me
In the precession of the mighty stars
Your name is sung and tattooed now on my heart
Here I will carry, carry, carry you

Forever

You have touched my life
So that now cathedrals of sound are singing, are singing
The waves have come to walk with you
To where you will live in the Land of Youth
Land of Youth

You will not ever be forgotten by me
In the precession of the mighty stars
Your name is sung and tattooed now on my heart
Here I will carry, carry, carry you
Here I will carry, carry, carry you

Forever

Hey [livejournal.com profile] nightflight[livejournal.com profile] nightflight! Ninten came in the mail today. He's so cute! ;; I've set him up in my room so I can see his smiling face greeting me~ ♥ Thank you so much!

I saw a guy at the library who looked like Marius! Had the same hair style, though he was blond instead of brunette. He even had a vest! I think he was helping an 8-year-old boy with his homework or something. Aww. I would've loved to take a picture of him, though I don't want him to feel like I'm stalking him. Your looks just remind me of one of my novel characters, that's all! ;;

Other than that, I'm just feeling really blah. I want to play Animal Crossing: New Leaf with everyone else, but I don't have a 3DS yet. :( I could watch more Anime, but everytime I do, I'm always having trouble getting the damn TV to work, and then after that, figuring out which remote lets you move between DVD options. Ugh. That and my Mom and Dad watch TV all the time, so I could get kicked out at any moment. This goddamn sucks.

Why is it that I get fic ideas for Kink Bingo when I'm not in Kink Bingo, then as soon as I sign up for a round, my motivation dries up like a puddle in a desert? 'Cause I wanna do an "OFF" fic where Zacharie gives the Judge a bath (and maybe Valerie) for the washing/cleaning square. I've also been listening to a lot of Radiohead because it provides an OFFy atmosphere.

Back to sleep until tomorrow then.

(DW wouldn't let me crosspost this entry for some reason. Bleeeegh)

You've been acting awful tough lately
Smoking a lot of cigarettes lately
But inside, you're just a little baby
It's okay to say you've got a weak spot
You don't always have to be on top
Better to be hated than love, love, loved for what you're not

You're vulnerable, you're vulnerable
You are not a robot
You're loveable, so loveable
But you're just troubled

Guess what? I'm not a robot, a robot
Guess what? I'm not a robot, a robot

You've been hanging with the unloved kids
Who you never really liked and you never trusted
But you are so magnetic, you pick up all the pins
Never committing to anything
You don't pick up the phone when it ring, ring, rings
Don't be so pathetic, just open up and sing

I'm vulnerable, I'm vulnerable
I am not a robot
You're loveable, so loveable
But you're just troubled

Guess what? I'm not a robot, a robot
Guess what? I'm not a robot, a robot

Can you teach me how to feel real?
Can you turn my power on?
Well, let the drum beat drop

Guess what? I'm not a robot
Guess what? I'm not a robot

Guess what? I'm not a robot, a robot
Guess what? I'm not a robot, a robot
Guess what? I'm not a robot, a robot

Review of FATAL, the world's worst RPG.

I can't believe I hadn't read this earlier. The review is hilarious. The game, on the other hand... The sheer badness of this game is... legendary. :o

I don't know whether to laugh or cry.

On an unrelated note, my current music is totally Homura's theme.

So far, I've listened to the demos of the Raggedy Ann musical, and save for several eye-rolling moments, it wasn't as traumatizing as I was expecting. Mainly because it was just the songs and didn't have as much dialogue from the show itself. But then we get to the Broadway soundtrack, which is basically a live recording of one of the five performances before the show was canned. Now the creepy is hitting you on the head like a sledgehammer. I had to stop for a break after three songs (not counting the Overture) to comprehend what I just heard.

Now, the Mp3s are of low quality, and either way, it's very hard for me to pick up lyrics. I need liner's notes, I need lyrics sites, 'cause no matter how great my hearing is, there's some singers that I can't understand no matter how hard I've tried. And this musical is such an obscure failure that Google brings me nothing. But here's what I've been able to make out so far:

Guess what Marcella, you're going to die! :DDD )

I close this rant with an excerpt from How Not to Write a Novel (The Golden Harmony dub of "The Brave Frog" needs to learn from this too):

Compassion Fatigue )

And I still have the rest of the musical to listen to. *weeps* Wish me luck, folks.

So I want to kill this waitress
She's worked here a year longer than I
If I did it fast, you know that's an act of kindness

But I believe in peace
I believe in peace, bitch!
I believe in peace
I believe in peace!

But I believe in peace
I believe in peace, bitch!
I believe in peace!

I want to kill this waitress
I can't believe this violence in mind
And is her power all in her club sandwich?

But I believe in peace
I believe in peace, bitch!
I believe in peace
I believe in peace!

But I believe in peace
I believe in peace, bitch!
I believe in peace!

I want to kill this killing wish
They're too many stars and not enough sky
Boys all think she's living kindness (heh)

~The Waitress~
~Tori Amos~

I relate to this song too well, and I'll tell you why. I hero-worshiped several fandom BNFs, but I was also intimidated by them. But yay! I got to be friends with them! Only for them to turn out to be humongous jerks. Usually there was no way I could directly talk to them, unless it was through LJ comments or something. I was always baffled as to how many close friends these BNFs had, especially when said friends gushed about what nice and mature people they were when to me they were anything but. I kept my mouth shut, yearning to speak my mind even if it meant a blow-up between us. The more I thought about what I wanted to say to the BNFs who were my "friends", the angrier and angrier I'd get.

And I know it's wrong. I know it's wrong to bottle anger, I know it's wrong to be consumed by so much rage by someone for the pettiest reasons, it's wrong for me to be wasting my time on it. It drains me and makes me feel horrible, and I wish all that pent-up anger and grudges would go away, so I can focus the things I love and that make me happy, but it haunts me and I hate it. Hence the "I believe in peace, bitch!", "I can't believe this violence in mind" and "I want to kill this killing wish" lines. The BNFs may or may not be horrible people, and admittedly I was extremely spiteful toward a few of them for the stupidest, shallowest reasons, but this crippling bitterness is a feeling that I desperately wished would go away. And no song better expresses that than "The Waitress."
shamanicshaymin: Pit bull hiding in the leaves. :3 (Molly/Gale :: OTP)
So, there's three Raggedy Ann musicals out there that I know of. One of them is the movie, which is fucked up as all hell, but I have a soft spot for it despite its flaws. Then there's the Broadway musical, which is frightening and disturbing and not in a good way. (Let's say it deserves its own post, mostly chocked full of horrified macros and .gifs. Seriously, its poster looks like a pulp cover.) It dropped after five showings and I still can't find the soundtrack anywhere. While scrounging the Internet for it for my own masochistic curiosity, I found another musical with Raggedy Ann & Andy that is virtually unknown. At least I have never heard anyone talk about it.

And what's this? It wasn't a disastrous flop at its release? And it was popular?

Stepping Stones, a 1923 musical comedy. )

Jerome Kern did a ton of well-received musicals and musical movies for four decades back in the day, but today we know him through some of his songs ("Ol' Man River", "A Fine Romance", "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes", "The Way You Look Tonight") and "Show Boat."

But wait! There's more!

Johnny Gruelle, the creator of Raggedy Ann, was a fan of Fred Stone and L. Frank Baum. Gruelle wrote a scenario for a stage show, which was never produced, in which the Scarecrow of Oz, played by Fred Stone, met Raggedy Ann. In 1923, Fred Stone and his daughter, Dorothy Stone, starred as Raggedy Andy and Raggedy Ann, respectively, in a musical extravaganza titled Stepping Stones with music by Jerome Kern and lyrics by Anne Caldwell.

I can't find anything else about "Stepping Stone," but I managed to find music files of the "Raggedy Ann" song.

Dear lord, all this research is making me feel old. Whether it's the 20s or 70s, what humongously different time periods Raggedy Ann came from compared to the 90s-2000s!
